Export Material using IFC

Hello all,

I wonder if it is possible to export/import materials using IFC? (the same way as we import bim objects)

Furthermore, is it possible to create new materials' parameters other than the existing ones? I know that is possible to add physical, thermal (...) in the materials, and I also know that I can add assets (parameters) to materials. My question is, can I add other assets than the existing ones?

Thank you!

Ruben

@Anonymous

I do not understand exactly what u mean by import/export material using IFC...can u elaborate exactly on what you are doing or trying to do? .. the material used in a model is exported along with the model which is being exported into ifc...but if u mean the material library itself being exported...no I don't believe so. Hmmm I'm still not sure I got ur question right!

On your second question...do you mean like duplicating an existing asset in the material browser, renaming it to something new and assigning it to different material? If so; then yes you can and all from within material browser and assets browser

Thanks for your reply RDAOU,

What I am trying to do is create a material in Revit (e.g. cork board) and then export that material using IFC. If I want to export a door or a wall, it is simple. I just create it in the model and then export it using IFC. However, if I create a material, can I also export it using IFC? Or Revit/IFC are yet not ready to do so?

This becomes particularly important in sensitivity analysis. Lets say that I want to analyse the benefits of different thickness of a cork board. If I export it as an object, I will have to create several objects with different thickness. However, if I can export the cork board as a material, then I would be able to change that directly in a single object. Not sure if I am being clear

Regarding my second question. Lets say I want to add a property named "renewable energy" in my cork board. Can I do it? Or I can only select existing assets? Also, can I add several assets or they are limited to physical, thermal, etc. (I believe its 4-5 different types).

Thanks!
