Existing building alterations

When using revit how is an esixting plan and elevations shown? I am looking at changing to revit. I do mainly alteradtions and additions to existing buildings. But all the information I see being produced in the tutorials etc is for a new building. Is it possible to show 2 buildings in the same project, either existing and new or 2 new buildings with in the same set of plans. ?

Revit has tools for phasing projects. Basically how it works is elements are assigned a phase as they are created. Then those elements can be demolished in a subsequent phase and new elements added. There are visibility controls to control how the elements from different phases are shown graphically.

This help topic may help explain as well.
