Existing architectural walls won't get demolished when placing Structural column in a newer phase

Hi everybody,

I've been wondering how i can fix this or even if it is possible.

For example, when in a newer phase you place a window on an existing wall, if i turn on the phase filter to show demolished only in the new phase, the existing wall will react and show me the sector in which the new window is going to be installed and thus demolished:

But when i place a new structural column in the newer phase, the existing wall won't show me which sector is getting demolished.

If i join the new column with the existing wall, the existing wall in its existing phase will appear affected by the future column, showing me a void where the future column will be.

And if i leave the newer column and existing wall unjoined, the existing wall won't show this interruption previously explained, but it won't show me the part to be demolished like it happens when you have a nested family in the wall.

Can anybody help me with this? Is there a work around it?

You have two options

1. Option 1: Use a wall opening separate to cut wall with first then place column
2. Option 2: Add a void in the column Family and check the box "Cut with Void when Loaded"
   1. Load the column back into the model
   2. use the cut Tool instead of join (See GIF below)

Thank you so much buddy! That's exactly what i needed!

Just a heads up for anyone reading in the future, remember to uncheck "Cuts Geometry" when creating the void inside the structural column family so the column itself doesn't get cut by the void.

@RDAOU sorry to bother again buddy,

this works great for the phasing part as it shows me the phase filter on the demolished sector, but i just realize that if i set my phase to see the existing model, the structural beams still appear to be affected by the future new element as previously explained, showing a gap where the future element will be.

Does it ring a bell on how to tackle that?

if you want an identical behavior to a Door or Window you need to use either of the following:

• Option 1: User the separate Wall Opening/Insert mentioned in the previous reply (ie: Use a window family simply blank with just a wall opening) this phases it similar to a window or door 
• Option 3: Nest the Structural column (shared so you would still be able to tag and schedule it) into the Wall insert mentioned in Option 1 - this way you have both

Edit: However, if you can still use Option 2 from Reply 1 and play with filters to show the gap filled

1. Filter to show Pervious + Demo and set Phase to New Construction ... you wouldn't see the gap
2. if the red color of demo bothers you, you can setup a new Filter "Previous + Demo1" with no override for Demolished elements & Existing then both would show same
