excessive zoom-out when switching views with object selected

When I selected an object, say a wall in plan, and then I switch views so I can see the selected wall in section, the new view is zoomed WAY WAY WAY out. Quite often it's caused by automatic dimensions that are miles away from the model. If I try to zoom extents with the object selected, the view won't change. I have to click to de-select the object, then I can zoom extents to get the model in view, and select previous. Then the automatic dimensions are are still miles out from the model.

I've noticed this behavior for years, over several different versions. I've always wondered about automatic dimensions - they don't always act predictably. They're description says they're supposed to automatically snap to the nearest object, but that's rarely the case. Most of the time they'll snap to some totally random object, out of the view window. And the dimension text is often out of the view window, and that can't be moved.

Does this happen to anyone else, another quirky Revit thing, or is this unique to my situation and installation(s)? Thanks

Revit should keep the zoom factor that I'm already in instead of zooming all the way out and I have to find my way back to where I was.  This is really a work-flow killer and is the most hated thing about Revit.
