Errors when I try to model a curved beam. Help?

Running Revit 2022.1, Educational Version.

I am attempting to model a structure similar to this algae dome, starting with the framing first...

I repeatedly watched 8020BIM's "How to Model Curved Beams in Revit" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olX5sqc_dcE&t=419s), but nothing I'm doing seems to be working...

  • I set up detail lines of the layout in plan view (a circle bisected by 4 equally spaced lines).
  • I created a section view exactly parallel to two "placeholder" columns so that I could draw a curved beam between them.
  • I tried a whole variety of placement planes... reference plan: profile plane, grid line 1, and grid line 2.
  • I attempted to draw the beam using a 2x8 dimensional lumber and an equivalently sized glulam beam.

I received the following error message: Can't draw because Work Plane is at a very sharp angle in this view. Go to another view or redefine the Work Plane.

This is my first time attempting this kind of geometry in Revit, and any help you can offer is much appreciated.

I'm attaching my working file for reference (59.4 Mb), though I've spared posting the various linked files.

Something like this?

Beam91-a.pngBeam91-b.png

3D Beams (e.g. Structural Framing) are placed on Mass Edges via the Pick Line tool.  "3D" is a setting on the Options Bar.

Thanks BarthBradley! That's exactly what I'd like to create. I'll give your instructions a shot tonight after class and see what I can put together.

Did you model that entirely in 3D? And were there a particular type of beam you selected to make the geometry possible?

I've been trying to replicate what you did, and it's not working for me...

Here's a quick snapshot from 3D view after running BM (Beam) command.

I have 3D Snapping on, and was using the Pick Line tool to select different parts of my mockup columns.

I couldn't find an option to "place on Mass Edges", so I was doing my best to interpolate what you meant.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Where is the mass?  Have you created it yet?

Since the footprint is a circle, you don't even need a mass:

- open an elevation view looking at the grid

- draw a curved model line

- go back to the plan view and radial array the line

- create beam using pick line with 3D box ticked on those lines

@ToanDN I'm not sure I understand the question. By "mass" do you mean that I'd need to create a Conceptual Mass first?

Yes.  Do you see the mass in @barthbradley screenshot?  You need to create it if you follow his instruction.

Here is how to create them without a mass.  Not saying anything is wrong with the mass approach, it is a good approach.

Thanks for the walkthrough, @ToanDN , really appreciate you taking the time. Sorry I'm a bit dense about this - learning to do something new with Revit.

I created the framing elevation, but when I try to draw the curved Model Line, I receive this warning: None of the created elements are visible in Elevation: Elevation 1 - a View. You may want to check the active view, its Parameters, and Visibility settings.

I double checked in VV (Visibility/Graphic Overrides) for that elevation, and all Lines are checked.

The Detail Level is set to "Fine."

Change the elevation view to Coordination discipline.

I changed the elevation's Discipline property to "Coordination", then retried drawing the curved Model Line, and got the same warning message.

VG > turn on Lines category. Also, when you started draw the line, what line style did you pick?  Make sure that line style is visible.

Nachricht 14 von 34

Yes, VG > Lines are active. All the lines.

When I started drawing I used Model Line with line style <Lines>

I've tried Thin Lines and Wide Lines as well, and they all produce the same warning: None of the created elements are visible in Elevation: Elevation 1 - a View. You may want to check the active view, its Parameters, and Visibility settings.

Post the file.

Or...check through this list of 33. And keep it handy for future reference.

Thanks for the list, @barthbradley - I'm going to print that out and go over it a lot!

Here's the very latest file I'm working on (69 Mb, just barely below the 71 Mb limit). Elevation 1a is the one I was trying to work in where I kept getting the warning message.

I didn't include any of the linked files, just for simplicity and so it could upload ok.

The Work Plane you are drawing on is in back of the View Cut Plane.

....just to clarify for you - your View Range doesn't capture the Grid Work Plane you are drawing on.  What you drew is there, but you are standing in front of it, so to speak.  Pay attention to your Section/Elevation Cut Plane, Crop Boundaries and Far Clip. For instance, all the yellow highlighted area shown in this screenshot, is all the Reference View will show when you are drawing on GRID 2 Work Plane. As you can see, Grid 2 is well within the yellow.

I've been trying to figure out the correct numbers to input for View Range, but not having any luck.

How do I determine where the Grid Work Plane is located so that I can input those values into my Properties>Extents>View Range?

For example, when I click on Grid Line 1 or Grid Line 2, some other lines appear but they don't form a bounding box or a yellow area like you've shown. Similar thing happens when I click on the Elevation 1a. Just blue lines that seem haphazard and don't depict a complete box. Neither of the Grids have any Properties - which is where I was looking  for the "Grid Work Plane" option.

I know I can go to Architecture > Work Plane > Show, but that just gives me a blue dashed grid that doesn't seem to help with the issue I'm having.

Just create a new framing elevation, not interior elevation, so it point directly at the grid line.

Just set the Associated Datum for the existing marker to "None", pull the marker back a bit and set Far Clipping to "No Clip".  Bada Bing!
