Element Keynote Switching

Hello All,

We are having an issue with element keynotes. Several elements have had the appropriate keynote assigned in their type properties, keynote has been applied and everything looks great with the legend on the sheet. However, for the last few days, when I reopen the model some elements have switched their keynote to the same one in the parent file.  In other words, an element used to be correctly keynoted EC3, solid surface countertop with integral 4" backsplash. Upon opening the model, it and several other elements have all been changed to DE1, EPDM roofing membrane. This is through no intentional action from our team. What the heck??

Background: we are using our own keynote .txt file and it has been working great up till now.

TIA for any help 🙂

Update: We're also experincing the same issue I've seen plauging other users where Revit lags then gives you the ol' "serious error encountered" dialog box. I haven't figured out a way to get the keynoting system to work again without restarting the program.

Check the keynoting settings for the location of the keynote file. Is it in a relative or absolute path? Is there a chance that Revit is using another file with the same name in another folder? Has the issue happened when two different projects were opened at the same time in the same Revit session?

Mr. Medina,

It's in an absolute path. The name of the file is unique to each project and we're experiencing this issue while this project is the only one open.

Thank you for your response!

Also check what the keynote is listed as (if any) in the Material Browser under Identity>Revit Annotation Information>Keynote

@PhilvK no keynote assigned there. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Element keynotes are assigned to family types.  Chances are a cat jumped on the keyboard and made the change

There is a known issue about this, that was resolved in Revit 2023,.02 according to this article:

That's how we've been using it and it's been functioning great up to this point. No office cats that I know of 🙂

My only other guess is that it's happening somewhere in our process to get the .txt file loaded into Revit. On the off chance that someone else follows this same process and can shed some light, I'll describe it briefly.

We have an excel file that we use to write and organize our keynotes. We use a macro to export all text you have selected in the excel file to a .txt file becuase the integral converter adds quotations around any strings with a quotation mark in it (e.g. 5/8" gypsum wall board would become "5/8" gypsum wall board" in the .txt file). This .txt file is then loaded into the Revit file and works a treat up till now.

My only other guess is maybe someone forgot to CTRL+A before running the macro and the .txt was missing some notes. It's also picky about which cell you're in when you run select all- if you're in a cell next to the cells with content it selects all cells in the workbook. If you're in a cell with content it will select all the cells with content. This could also be the culprit.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

What about the Revit version? The link in my previous message says that it was a known issue that was fixed with an update. So, it may be that the error is not happening for the reasons that you are mentioning.

We are using 2023 and haven't installed that update yet. It's a good idea anyway, so I'll try it and see if it helps. Thanks!
