Editing material rendering appearance makes Revit unresponsive

I have a small Revit 2018.3 file - just under 22 mb and was created less than a week ago.  I have two users who have tried to add new materials and then edit the rendering appearance by adding a jpg image.  This works with some jpg files but not for the majority (it working is not dependent on the size of the jpg).  Process they are following: click "add new material" > go to "appearance" tab of new material > click in the "image" box under the "generic" drop-down > navigate to the desired jpg and click OK.  Once they click OK, the processing circle shows up and Revit becomes unresponsive.  Eventually Revit crashes or must be forced to quit.

They have the latest update of Revit installed, plenty of available memory, latest graphics driver installed, tried turning hardware acceleration off, and disabled 3rd party add-ins, but to no avail.  I am out of ideas.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

FWIW: I tested a few of your images without issue.

Add the image folder(s) to the Additional Render Appearance Paths.
