I want to change the line in this detail item family and make it thicker, but do not see the options?

There are many ways to  to make those lines thicker, Depending on the situation and its use, One way is in Object Styles or line styles in the Manage Tab Under Additional Settings.

If you are wanting a thicker line in addition to the current "detail items" line style, edit the family. Then go to manage --> object styles --> and create a new subcategory and make it whatever you like.

If you are wanting to change the thickness of the "detail items" line style itself you need to do it in the project as @msgambelluri stated.

Once a lines style from a family is loaded into a project then the project settings for that line take precedent. Any change you make to the lines style in the family short of renaming it to create a new style will not override the properties in the project.

Thanks LOT for your explanations! This is exactly what I was looking for.

The tricky thing is in family editor, you have to go through Manage> Object Styles to add or edit line styles,  instead of  using Manage >Additional Settings > Line Styles as you usually do in project.

In order to find out which governs the appearance of the line from a family, I did a test -

I copied a line style name from the project and created a new subcategory in family editor by pasting the name to be sure they had the same name, but I set it in different color, gave it different thickness - it turned out, the line carried the setting from family,  overrode the setting in project - HOWEVER, a strange thing happened later after I changed the line setting in family and loaded it back to the project, the line didn't change, it still carried the first time setting, nothing same as either the project or the current family setting, not sure what caused that.

" Any change you make to the lines style in the family short of renaming it to create a new style will not override the properties in the project."

I misunderstood you at first , thought you meant line style setting in project governs how the lines from family will look if in case they share the same name. I came to realize that the line style (subcategory under detail item) is nothing to do with the line styles in project.

Line Setting in family that first time loaded into the project decides the appearance of the line in project; If need to change the setting, should create another style with different name in order to see the update. This seems to be a glitch, needs to be fixed.

That isn't the way it should work. Project's Object Styles Subcategory settings RULE no matter.  Definitely something needs fixing.

Post your Family here for testing.

I suspect it is probably the Revit issue. But here is the family I was testing with.

No issue with Revit.  Here's screenshots to prove it:

Yes, as @Mike.FORM stated- "If you are wanting to change the thickness of the "detail items" line style itself you need to do it in the project "

so both your suggestion and msgambelluri  suggestion are to change detail items' line weight, but I have several "detail item" families in the project, I can't directly change the line weight of the detail items in project, I have to do it in family, so @Mike.FORM 's solution is the most appropriate.

The above threads on my test were to respond to his comments on that the updates in family won't work if the family has already been loaded into the project, you have to create another subcategory with different name and assign it to the object and then load the family to the project again, which I think it is a glitch and you may not agree.

All I did was test the family that you posted above. I thought you said it wasn't working properly. I had no issues with it, so obviously there is no "glitch" with Revit.  The "glitch" you are experiencing must be due to something else.

You could edit the line weight of your subcategories of object styles in project.
Just like the materials, if there is the same name in project and new family.
It will apply the one in project when importing, not the one in your family.
