If I right click on an unopened view in the project browser and duplicate it, Revit opens tabs for both the original view and the new duplicate. Why is this? I have never needed the original view opened and always have to remember to close it right away. At best it's an inconvenience and at worst I might end up accidentally altering the original view instead of the duplicate.

What version?
Nothing like that happens on my end, but if it did, I'd be looking into my Revit INI file settings.
I looked through the .ini file but didn't see anything obvious that would affect it. After further testing, I have determined that the behavior only occurs when selecting "duplicate with detailing" and not a plain "duplicate." Perhaps Revit has to open the original view to retrieve the view workset on which all the detail elements reside in order to copy them? This seems like really sloppy coding or something.
I just tested on R2024.1
And indeed, out of the 3 duplicating option, the "duplicate with detailing" opens the original and the new (copy) view. The 2 other options just open the new (copy) view.
I can't come up with a reason why the developers would have done that on purpose. So, maybe this is just an odd behavior no one really noticed yet.
On the upside, now you know you are not insane ![]()

I think most people know it and just don't care. I do find it irritating as well.
In Revit 2022 (what I have open right now) using Duplicate does not open both. When I use Duplicate with Detailing I get both views opened. I assume that is "necessary" to copy the annotation elements to the new view and then open the new view too. Wild assumption...
