Doors: Large Family size vs. Multiple Families

I am struggling to decide how exactly to build door families.

I like to have the panels nested in and type driven with a Family Type parameter.

  • I go back and forth on whether they should be shared nested or not.  Having them shared nested allows users to very easily modify door panel parameters without them having to be associated in the door host family.  But regardless of which type you choose to load (from type catalog), it also brings in every door panel in the family into the project.  Then when more doors are loaded, Revit asks if one wants to use the sub-component from the project or the family.  I really don't want Standard Revit users  being presented with that decision.
  • It makes it so that every door must live in the host family making the size of the family very large.
  • On the flip side, having them shared nested allows the door panel parameters to be able to be modified without having to open up the family or associating the parameters to the host (which is particular a hassle with shared nested families)

Then I'm very indecisive about whether I should even have the panels driven by a parameter and instead have each door panel represented by it's own family.  This results in having to load a ton of individual door families being loaded into the project.  A single family with 12 nested panels is less MB's than 12 individual families.  This is where I question if the size of the family is less important than how it's made.

Probably hard to follow this rambling, but I think those who have built a lot of doors families will understand and I welcome any suggestions or thoughts

hank you in advance.

FWIW: There's been some robust discussions about this in the past on this Forum, as well as at RevitForum.org (see topics authored by Twiceroadsfool).  Search them out.  Everything that can be said, has been said in these discussions.

It appears you know all the ins and outs of either approach so if you are the person who can make a Revit decision to your firm then just pick one and go with it.  And regarding Standard Users to be presented with questions when reloading a family, tell them what to choose and why instead of trying to omit the questions.  They have brain too.

I use <Family Type...> parameters to assign shared nested components in a family.

So do you just have the most common door panels nested into the family with a library and load in other panels as required?

I've tried searching for this topic before and haven't been able to find much.  Maybe I'm just not entering the right search terms.  I usually get a bunch of information describing what shared nested families are and that you can tag them separately.

ARRGH! Miserable search engine. I can't find the discussions I was thinking of either, but I distinctly remember participating in them.  Maybe they've expired (unlikely) or maybe they are buried in another discussion that got hijacked (more likely).  If I get lucky, I'll post a link to them.
