Door Family

Hi,

I'm creating a family for an automatic opening vent which is designed to blend into the wall. It has the same properties as a door however it is typically positioned much higher on the wall and people do not walk through it. So my questions are;

1. Should this be a door family? if not, which family template do you recommend using?

2. Is it still necessary to have a plan swing? as it's typically out of the plan view range

Many thanks

This sounds to me much more like a window than a door, so this answers question 1

About number 2: It is not necessary but why not do it? You never know when you will need it. Maybe not in your current project but in the next you might need. I'd suggest you to do it. You can control its visibility and it is a good training.

Thanks for the reply, I'll consider a window family. I guess whether its a door family depends whether it needs to be in the door schedule?

The reason I am reluctant to create a door swing for it is because the opening angle differs depending on the door size. There are 2 types of these vents; one which is hinged vertically like a traditional door which I can create a formula between the door size and the open angle so that the plan swing changes. The second is hinged at the bottom and I don't think it's possible to do it

It depends whether you want this vent door to be part of your door schedule or not. If it will be part of the door schedule, then i would use door template. If not, I would use alternative like specialty, mechanical or generic. You can use window assuming this won't affect your schedule.

"The second is hinged at the bottom and I don't think it's possible to do it" Yes it is. You can model everything on the family and control its visibility by parameters. Altough this seems easy, i would do that with nested families

you can use a normal door and by adjusting the sill height in the properties and go to edit type if you want to change the LxWxH of the door parameters? thanks
