Door Family Parameters and Tags - Advice

Hello all,

I finished our doors library and I noticed a problem, so I would like your advices.

Each time that I tag a door display the Height and Width parameters in the Label. In our doors I created two new family parameters 'Ouverture Porte Width' and 'Ouverture Porte Height' in order to indicate the Clear width and height. So I just start to wonder if the thought to create these parameters was wrong and If I could use the default parameters Height and Width to indicate the 'Clear width and height.

1. Should I used the Width and Height parameters for the doors families? If yes how can I change it now and instead of Ouverture Porte Height to have the Height Parameter? (I cannot figure out how can I indicate the same distance but having the Width Parameter..) - See Image 1

2. The other idea is to change the families parameters to shared parameters, so after in the tag to add the shared parameters 'Ouverture Porte Width' and 'Ouverture Porte Height' and to have the result that I want.

The problem will be if we use also another kind of door that will not have this structure, so I should need create a second tag with the Height and Width.

I would like to know if the thing that I did (to create two others parameters in order to indicate the Clear width and height is wrong? What I should do?

I would be glad if someone tell me if I messed up the Width / Rought Width / Ouverture Porte Width parameters ... check the family below to see what distance I indicate in each case.

Thank you in advance!

I tend to use shared parameters for these kind of jobs.

When creating our library we considered what kind of shared parameters we should have available.

We made a fixed list of shared parameters which rarely is updated and are used in all our families.

For some projects we sometimes use a second set of parameters specific for a client/project.

Further we prefix our shared parameters so not to conflict/confuse with others

I wouldn’t use the width parameter

I would say that width indicates the width of the actual door before assembling

and rough width is the width of the opening you need in the wall

If you want to change the parameter to shared or to a new one you have made, just enter the same values on this parameter before changing the parameter that controls the geometry.

Not messed up at all, @mairh_tsek.  Both Tag and Family look good.  They should function just fine. What's the issue?

I would use:

Width and Height for the nominal Width and Height dimensions of the Door

Rough Width = Width + ((2 x (Frame Width + Gap))

Rough Height = Height + (Frame Width + Gap)

I don't see the need for additional parameters "Ouverture Porte" when the built-in parameters can serve.  If you want the schedule header says "Ouverture Porte ..." you can rename the field headers.

It would simplify the Tag family because you can use the built-in parameters right off the bat, no need to introduce shared parameters to it.

Thank you for your answers. Always I based on your answers in order to continue as I am learning from you..so really I appreciate it!

When I created the first door for our library I prefered to use other parameters (ouverture Porte Height/Width) as it wasn't very clear for me the difference between Width and Rought Width.

So I kept the Rought Width for the opening of the Wall, the Width for the distance from fixe part to fixe part and my parameters for the Clear Width (the same thought for the Height)..

Having finished more than 60+ doors and windows what do you advice me do to?

Change my family parameters Ouverture Porte Height/Width to shared parameters in order be able to Tag the and schedule or find a way to use the default parameters instead of mine? (I think that I need more more time for the second one)

Thank you in advance!

If you are far ahead and, more importantly, consistent with setting up the families then you should keep the shared parameters as you show.  There are no harms really.

To sum it up:

Ouverture = dimensions inside of door frame

Width & Height = dimensions outside of door frame

Rough Width & Rough Height = dimensions for rough-in

Good to me.

@ToanDN,

Yes, all the families that I created have this structure. So I will just replace the family to shared parameters.

In the projects it is sure that we will use also other types of doors and windows outside of our Library ( as I don't have yet for example sectional doors or roller doors..), so should I also edit these families and add my parameters to them too?  - for scheduling reasons..
