Dimensioning in 3D Views Not Working

I am having trouble dimensioning in a 3D view in Revit 2018. I have locked my 3D view and picked my work plane but after I pick it, my dimensions don't light back up where I can select them. Any reason why this happening?

Make sure you are in the view itself....not working from it when placed on a sheet.

I did try it first while the view was on a sheet but have since then tried it in the actual view from the project browser and it still isn't working.

I don't think that dimensions and measurements can be made in 3D views. Many functions are turned off when using a 3D view.

If you want to dimension something, I recommend that you create a floor plan with the desired cut plane and view depth, and measure/dimension on it.

See video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlD_wHAa8q4 This is what I'm trying to do but on walls and niches.

You are not, by chance, talking about working within Viewer Mode? That would easily explain your issues.

I just checked and my Revit isn't in viewer mode.

I saw your video. I didn't know you could dimension on a 3D view! Setting up a workplane seems to allow this to work. Cool!

Every component in Revit acts uniquely, and some don't have snaps that allow you to click on certain parts of the component. Walls and niches might be included in this criteria.

If you're able, can you create a second video showing what part of which walls/niches you want to dimension? Perhaps the wall's family can be modified with more snaps, or a plane can be created on the parts of the walls that you want to dimension.

Ah....I think I know why you can't dimension....  The view is in Perspective.   It needs to be in Orthographic for the dimension tool to work.

I actually just built the niche into the wall than did my shelves as a "model in place component" then copied in a section view the other two shelves. I just set the wall on the right interior face as the work plane for the 48" dimension and then for the shelf depth, I set the top face of the actual shelf as the work plane and the dimension snaped to the front and rear face after doing that. Hope this helps! I did a video, but I'm waiting for it to be approved for posting. I'll post to this form so you can see what I did for this particular project.
