Dimensioning an Imported Cad DWG

I notice that if I update a linked AutoCAD DWG file in any way, all of the dimensions become invalid and get deleted. Is there a way to avoid this?  I need to be able to update the DWG files if there are changes.  As a test I opened one of the DWG files and simply resaved it, to give it a new date.  That was enough of a change to delete all of the dimensions associated to that DWG. Even though the content of the file did not change at all.

What is the best practice here?  Thanks

Nardo

Any update - even if Revit saves your file - in a linked CAD DWG will make Revit forget the references it needs for dimensions. Moral of the story - DON'T do it!

If you are reasonably sure that the CAD DWG will not change, then you can drop a Revit point or line at the reference points you need for dimensions and dimension from that.

Revit doesn't like dimensioning to anything linked in, even other Revit models...

It is why we have Copy/Monitor...

Best Practice is not to dimension to linked DWG elements. The manner in which Revit handles referencing AutoCAD elements is too unpredictable to trust.

As for dimensions applied to linked Revit elements. It is intended to support that workflow. In practice though it is risky too. Especially so when worksets/worksharing is factored in. Users can forget to reload linked files before synchronizing their work and that can cause Revit to delete tags/dimensions that reference elements that an individuals version of a linked file doesn't have yet...worse the user has no idea where those elements getting deleted really are.

Unfortunately, placing dimensions on and tagging linked elements can lead to a trail of tears. It is much safer to place those annotations on the elements directly in their own file and then use the By Linked View feature to show annotation required for those elements. It is probably better to place such dimensions in linked DWG files too and let Revit display them too.
