I am trying to create a dimension in a 3d orthographic view that shows the height of this object. Normally I'd activate the view, click on set work plane, click pick a plane, and dimension that way. But because the object is rounded I cant pick the correct plane that allows for the vertical dimension I need. How do i fix this?

Pick a Plane of something next to it that is not rounded - or temporary create a 3D reference object like a wall or something. Or am I misunderstanding the challenge?
I made the orthographic view to be put on a sheet. I did this by making my object an assembly and creating an assembly view, so I can't pick something next to it because there is nothing next to it. Hope I am making sense
Just to clarify...you are trying to place a vertical dimension like I'm showing here; right?
If so, why don't you just orient the Work Plane to a Grid Line?
No I included a photo in my question that shows the dimension I'm trying to get. Top to bottom
Like this. Sure it can be done easily.
- add a ref plane in a plan view and name it
- go to the assembly 3d view and set work plane
- place dim

Orient the Work Plane to a Grid Line then.
That's exactly the same as using a Grid, except a Grid is less gymnastics. Just place a Grid. Bada bing!
Very nice. Good idea.
