Dimension cut off

Dimensions automatically ask for another dimensions. For instance if I provide a dimension from wall a to wall b, the dimension wants me to provide another anchor. In order to finish the dimension I have to click on a space upon which there is no dimensional anchor.  In a dense model this means zooming out. Is there a way to simply end the dimensioning process once I have the dimension that I want.

...or zoom in.  I don't think I've ever had to struggle with this. How dense is this view?  If elements are grouped that tightly, will the dimensions even be understandable?

It's just annoying and I was thinking there should probably be a way to stop the dimensioning process that makes more sense. I can't count the amount of times I finish a final dimension and create another by accident, which forces me to restart the entire series.  Speaking of which, is there a way to undo the last dimension created in a series of dimensions without having to simply restart the entire thing?

You can always press ESC a couple of times to exit the command or start the next command, that will drop dimensions.

If you have too many witness lines in a dimension string, you can select the dimension string and then on the contextual tab there is an add/remove witness lines. Click that and then click the element the unwanted witness line is dimensioning to, that will remove it.

You don’t need to restart, if you click on something accidentally, just click it again, or you can just finish the dimensions, select it, right click on the dot in the middle of the unwanted witness line and select remove witness line.

I'm a pretty advanced Revit user and I just ran into this scenario.  In my situation, I have a dwg link of a custom cut pattern on a large metal panel wall in an enlarged elevation.  It does have thousands of points in this linked file, and even with all my select options toggled off, dimensions will still attempt to anchor on any of those available points.  To answer the 4 year old question @barthbradley had, yes, dimensions can still be legible even in this dense field since our dimensions are black and with an opaque background over a light gray pattern.  I'm going to dig into the journal file to see if there is a "command" that effectively closes or finishes a dimension string without having to click into empty space to close it.  Hitting escape several times as @loboarch suggests will cancel any dimensions placed in the process. I'm with you, @jfjacques this is a super annoying and age old dilemma.

Hey @randy_lmn, I guess you had no luck with finding a "command"?

Although it doesn't happen often it is definitely annoying when it does. The should just add a check to apply changes in the ribbon menu similar to other commands.
