Dear all,
In which case is a Element Keynote preferred over a type mark tag?
I am more prone to use type mark tags over Element Keynotes but I would like to know the best practice and what is the original intent of both concepts?
For instance, in my team some use Element keynotes for tagging a air conditioning unit with "A/C" but why not using a type mark with the same abbreviation instead?
Kind regards,
Vincent
Type vs Instance is the simple answer. One affects all, the other does not.
That is not true.
Both Keynote and Type Marks are type related thus they only affect the type in which you are modyfing not the whole Family.
Vincent, the original purpose for Keynotes was to fill with standrad CSI codes, however many users do use it to fill any kind of custom keynotes.
The main advantage of Keynotes over Type Marks in my opinion is that since Keynotes rely on a single txt file it is very easy for someone to be responsible for creating the codes and descriptions thus avoiding the chance of human error that would for certain occur.
For example imagine you have 10 people working in the same file and each one of them had to type the description of a system or a material, that is very prone to error. If someone is in charge of it everyone else would only have to load the correct txt file and select the right Keynote to use. Also if the txt file is updated it is cascade to the entire Project updating all views and schedules.
That is for certain a time-saver.
Hope it helps.

Really? It was true back in January when I said it. Did something change between then and now?
Keynote types...
1. Element
2. Material
3. User
Can be standardised, use same file for multiple projects, and multiple users..
more to describe certain aspect of the element and conditions.. which can keep changing...
Keynoting requires bit of expertise to audit, and maintain and most important keynote file
DOESN'T SAVE BY DEFAULT with the REVIT FILE... so one may need notepad file access/editable
to make changes and use..
Type Mark
This one is purely for Category tag, numbering ( counting ) , comment etc..
Best part about Type Mark is you can combine multiple information in one Tag.. so one TAG may read
1. Room Name
2. Room Number
3. Area
4 Finish and so on...
and based on Category the Type Mark Tags are customised.. so there's no " ONE " type of Tag
but varies as per category..
most important
gets SAVE BY DEFAULT with the REVIT FILE... so its not like keynote, where in this case anyone can
edit and make changes ..

Okay, then what was the OP asking back in 2018? I'm betting it's your question now in 2021. I could be wrong though.
Two types are similar but in Tge, it is shown more information that inserted in properties
He is not asking for the difference between Type vs Instance parameters. He wants to know the difference between the use of keynotes vs mark tag and which is a better practice. Your answer - Type vs Instance is the simple answer - has nothing to do with his question. Both Keynote and Type Marks are type related and will affect all instances. I have used both and am also wondering which is best practice. Hopefully someone with enough experience will have the answer.
Okay, so your question is; which is best: Keynotes or Type Marks? Well, being that you have used both, what do you think is best? Seems to me, you are the best judge of what's "best"?
