Develop a Non-Printing Layer to a wall and floor assembly

I have wall and floor assemblies, that often the structural elements of which are only really showable when my architectural model is integrated with my structural engineer's model.

For example, I don't want a generic 12" Joist layer of a floor assembly to obscure the actual joists that my engineer will be showing in his model.  or which may be better done through a BEAM SYSTEM than through a floor assembly.  That being said I still have stuff that is above and below this joist layer in the floor assembly, that is currently part of my floor.  My first thought was to just switch it from being a MTL JOIST LAYER to being an AIR LAYER.  But visually this shows no different in the model or in sections.  it still creates a mass that obscures everything that is actually modelled there.  When really I don't want it to show at all.

My question is, how can I in effect have a VOID layer in a floor, roof, wall assembly that would allow for me to account for the space of these elements, but not have it actually obscure those same elements?

Also I really don't want to separate the elements as keeping them somewhat in the same assembly makes modelling and modifications to that model easier.

A little hard to visualize what you are describing.  Got pictures?

Either create 2 floors with a gap between them, or create parts form the floor (some limitation applied) and exclude the core from parts.
