Detailing waterproofing in 2D callouts and in 3D

Hey there!

I have attached an image in this post and was wondering what would be the best way to detail some ground floor waterproofing that is not necessarily part of any floor/wall, but is on the outside of some structural concrete. My main couple of questions are:

  • 2D representation - As a 1:5 detail that I would like to make, what is the best way to recreate the red/orange and teal lines around the concrete as some kind of component/sweep or any other element that can actually be keynoted and also and maybe most importantly be flexible to follow the lines of the concrete? I need it to be flexible enough to be used in other locations where the concrete line will be different and I do not want to use lines because they cannot be keynoted.
  • 3D representation - From a 3D modeling perspective, what would be the best way to go about and waterproof a concrete frame on the ground floor level? As realistically some layers will be overlapping or stopping short of certain elements, I want to have the flexibility to control these parameters. Also, it would be good if the waterproofing membranes can be a single element that can follow both horizontal and vertical surfaces.

Thank you for your time and help!

Normally if I want the waterproofing to show in 3d, I would use paint waterproofing to the surface. Paint will work with system family but not with custom family. If this is structure column, you may have to add extra paint parameter to the surface so you can add waterproofing to the surface.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Although painting an item could work in 3D visually it does not provide much benefit as I am looking for a solution where I could have 2-3-4 waterproofing layers stacked on top of each other, covering different parts of the concrete structure and overlapping to certain extents. Ideally, the solution should show up both in 3D and 2D view, as the waterproofing will have a certain thickness to each of the layers.

If you looking for stacking, you may have to create custom line base family to show where the waterproofing overlap. Most often I would create different waterproofing material for different layer. You can use material tag to call it out on 2d detail as well as 3d if needed. Also have you look into parts? Parts allows you to break apart the assembly and you can custom edit the surface to reflect where the waterproofing material start and end. Then in section, you can highlight those material using filter.
