Design Options

Working on reno, lots of different options. Making different option sets for every floor.

Would be great to be able to connect corresponding options from floor to floor as stair placement and mezzanine change.

ie: option 2 of 1st floor set always matches up with option 3 of 2nd floor set, while option 3 of 1st floor set matches with option 1 of 2nd floor set.

Is there a way of doing this?

More annoying though is that detail lines and all (many?) annotations cannot be associated with options... WTF? I'd assume most people sketch things out using options, ie: quickly iterate placement of beams + kitchen etc... which is exactly what options are for.... Instead I have to make a new sheet for every option.

Workarounds? Am I missing something here?

...Detail Lines are view-specific anyways, so I don't understand your point here. But, your other challenges (frustrations) I can totally relate to. I'll stick around to see what new insight I might gleen.

Like has already been mentioned detail lines are view specific, so if you are makings "options" with detail lines, then you really don't even need to use the design options functionality in Revit. Instead just make a duplicate view and draw all the detail lines you want on top of it.

Design options are intended to be used for model elements that change from option to option.

I am not sure I completely understand the request to have design options "match up" with each other. I think what you want is probably possible. The use of "option sets" can allow you to mix and match options from different areas of a building, I am just not sure exactly what you want to do. I just need a more concrete example so I can understand better.

hey LOBO

The solution to my first problem is to use model lines/ model text. That way I don't have to create a new floor plan view for every new option I create.  !!

My request for meta options stands though! Unless there's a big omission on my part here as well.

I'm sketching several options for every floor. (It's a painful reno.) Every floor is a separate option set.

If I select Option 3 of my 3rd floor option set.  The option for the second floor and first floor default to their primary option: option 1. These primary options do not match up with Option 3 of my 3rd floor option set. The latter has a mezzanine, therefore it needs to match up with Option 3 of my 2nd floor option set.  Moreover the stair from the primary option of the 2nd floor option set also interferes with Option 3 of my 3rd floor option set.

(All these problems are also exacerbated if I different options require different demo's as well. The demo option needs to match the "built" option. )

So how could I get the option 3 of my 3rd floor option set, all the while getting option 3 of my 2nd floor option set?

I could make the latter my primary option, but then that doesn't work, because I Option 2 of my 3rd floor option set needs to match up with option 2 of my second floor option set and so on...

Better would be to bring in everything from option 3 of the second floor option set onto option 3 of the third floor option set. But then that destroys the flexibility of my options. and option 3 of my third floor option set might want to potentially match up with several options on the 2nd floor option set.

These problems would only be aggravated on a single floor with multiple option sets, the above solutions become useless when considering demos. Essentially every floor view should have the ability to lock in a different option from different option sets.  Plan 1 = option 1 of option set 2, option 2 of option set 2, and option 4 of option set .

In the visibility and graphics of the view, you can set the options you want to see specifically rather than allowing the view to default options to "primary".  By specifically defining what options are displayed from different option sets I think you should be able to control what options are showing and line them up correctly.

Hey there,

I was wondering how people dealt with design options that required different demos.

If I have demo option 2, and new option 2. How can I match them up?

Thanks!

Wait sry, I just thought design options were specific to floors, because I set them up that way. The previous answer stands.

Actually I have to reinstate it, design options don't seem to work w phases. Any workarounds?

Phases are project wide. There is no way to match up a phase, exactly with a design option.  You might be able to work around that using project parameters and view filters to control visibility, but it is going to be a really manual process.

Again with the options.

If I go in VG and set the design options for the page this tells the document which design options to see,

but if I want to edit the plan that appears, I have to change the option in the option menu. Is there any way of setting that menu to a page default. It's annoying to go from page to page and always search for the right option to edit.

This link is a good break-down of how to deal w design options and phases. A bit painful but works. Hard to think of another workaround.

Like I mentioned though, my main problem now is that though I've placed all the right options in my VG. The selected phase is not the right one by default in the options menu. Everytime I go from one view to another I need to go to the options menu on the bootm

Any way of setting that one by default.
