The ohter day it was noticed that several views had been deleted from a model. No sweat we'll just open a backup copy and recreate the views right? Wrong. The workshared model is only saving 1 backup. When I go to save as....options... the number of backups is by default 1 not 10+. I do a save as and resave the model as central change the number of backups and repeat the process, sure enough the number of backups says 1 again when you go into the save as options. WTF. How can I make sure what the actual number of backups being created is? Thanks for the help and apologize if this has been covered before I did use the search funtion to no avail.

That of the local is inherited from the central...If it is workshared on the local network, doing the following should set/reset the max number of backups (
NOTE: The rational breakdown of 20 backups on workshared project is equivalent to an average of 4 users saving 5 times a day (or a similar ratio). ie: with 20 backups you can potentially rollback to any previous save during that day only (not even the previous day). If your intent to is to roll back to a version from a previous week or some 2-3 days back 20 backups are as good as 1
When worksharing on a local network, your BIM manager should be backing up the central on a weekly or biweekly basis (not only relying on the automatic backups)
