Hi all. Over the years we have amassed thousands of "details" = drafting views. We try to keep them in a detail library and update the library when we revise the details, usually due to code changes or interpretations. But it can be difficult to tell sometimes which one is the most up-to-date and which one is old and should be replaced. I would like to see an instance parameter associated with each drafting view that would show a "last revised" date. Ideally this would auto-populate with the date when someone changes anything (but not when they open it without making changes), but I'd settle for a user field that could be filled in. Anyone know a way to achieve this? Preferably globally (add to the detail view system family, rather than individually per detail which would take forever). TIA.
In your position, I would create a project parameter (Instance parameter) and assign it to the Views category. This would naturally be a manually-entered field since as far as I know there is no way to auto-populate the date in anything besides Titleblock families. (If there is indeed a way, I'm happy to hear it.) This feature would be nice to have anywhere, similar to how in Excel a formula can make the date auto-populate in any cell; but for now it is not available, to my knowledge.
To make quick work of populating the field, users could hold Shift and select multiple views (or Ctrl + select) then populate the field one time for all of the details which they updated. Details which were updated could also be stowed away temporarily in a View Type specifically for details which have been updated but for which the new date field has not been updated. Then, after they are done with that session of updating details, they could Shift + select all the views in that View Type on the project browser, fill in the Date-Updated field once, and change the View Type of those drafting views back to their "home" View Type. It takes a few steps but is a fairly organized and methodical way to go about this.
I'd like to hear what other people have to say about this; organization and accurate data retention is indeed important in this industry, and I'll happily hear others' methods of staying organized and up-to-date.
Not to be contrary, but I need to ask...how would one know they are using the latest and greatest revision?
