so this is a question that might be a bit way out there...
is there a way to import data from an external database into Revit and then populate rooms with occupant information based on the info in the database? I know it's not really meant to do space management of that nature but it seems like it should be no big deal given how complex the rest of the software is.
You can Link Excel table to Revit schedule:
- Apps such as: https://diroots.com/revit-plugins/excel-to-revit-as-drafting-legend-and-schedule-views-with-tablegen...
- Dynamo: https://www.cad-notes.com/importing-an-excel-table-to-revit-table-using-dynamo/
- Revit DBLink: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/revit/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2021/ENU/Revit-D...
LOL...I am so new to Revit that I have not really dealt with schedules much yet. but am very willing to learn and have a Udemy course queued up. So what I am inferring from what you are saying that I can then drive room occupancy parameters with a schedule imported and connected to a database? (I am willing to try to do the work to figure it out if you tell me that its possible!!!)

For room occupancy, you don't need any of the fancy approaches, you just need to use a key schedule.
Example:
A key schedule for Use Groups
Assign one Use Group to a Room to populate multiple parameters:
okay, thanks! I will look into "key schedules" sooner than any others, then.
the ideal I'd love to make work is to make it so I can connect my Revit model to a spreadsheet (that other people can update) with people's names and then when the names get updated, automatically my drawing will update (with first and last names and org symbols.)
Ideate BIMLink does everything you are looking to accomplish. You can easily create/edit your room data in Excel and bring that info back into your Revit model to update existing room info. Additionally, if you do not have the rooms in Revit, you can have Ideate BIMLink create the new rooms with all of the data pre-populated. Additionally, regarding Key Schedules, Ideate BIMLink can also create new key schedule data as well. This way you do not have to waste your time creating rows and rows of key schedule data by hand.
Hope this helps
