One of the issues that I have found with grouping and associating objects in a parametric array is that it appears that there isn't a way to cut the objects with a void extrusion. Is there a way to copy an object without grouping and associating?
I have found a way to do exactly what I want to do but it is a bit of a pain. In the attached picture, the stud wall is one family, with the components (studs, plates, etc. The studs are the parametric array of course) nested in that family, the opening is another family built in the same manner. I was able to cut all the studs through the openings by creating an extrusion in place, using the cut geometry tool, then hiding the extrusion.
I could nest the opening family inside the wall family, but it still appears that there is no way to automatically cut the geometry with a void extrusion if the geometry is a part of the grouped and associated parametric array. Any help would be appreciated.
PS, the reason that I decided on families to do this is because I need the ability to control every component precisely and independently, create schedules, tags, etc.
Sadly, you can't cut an array. Like others said, curtain wall is the best tool for modelling studs.

So the issue that I believe I would have with curtain walls is the level of control that I would have with them. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
For instance, can you create rake walls with a curtain wall? Can you control things like adding double studs, double trimmers top plates that either extend or cut back depending on whether or not the wall butts or frames past another wall? I also need to be able to add channels, ladder backing, and I need to be able to schedule all these parts, create cut lists, etc. As far as I've been able to tell, I can do 99% of what I need to do with families, but it appears to me that I would have some trouble accomplishing some of this with curtain walls.
maybe you can do a combination of loadable families and curtain walls to get the best of both Worlds. Explore everything you need to know about curtain walls and then decide what to do...
