For reference, we are using Revit 2019. We have an extension job that requires new stairs to go from the garage to the ground floor. I have used an in place void to cut out the existing floor to make way for the new stairs. This makes the cut, but when my view is set to show the existing phase, the new phase and also the demolition phase, i cannot see my stairs from the ground floor plan. the cut piece of floor is hiding the stair. I changed my phase filter to show the Demo phase only but i cant find the demolished piece of floor to make it transparent. If i change my phase filter to show New and Previous phases, the stairs will show. I am pretty sure this is a Revit 2019 issue as i have cut floors this way for years and never had a problem. Has anyone else had this problem? any ideas?? I have done the latest update for revit and this issue is still there.

I don't understand the phasing. What is the begin and demo phase for the floor, the void cut, and stairs?
The floor that i am cutting a hole in is on the existing phase. The void i am using to cut the hole in is on the New Construction Phase and The Stairs are built on the New Construction Phase. When i look at the cut area in a 3D view that has the phase filter set to show complete, it shows the cut piece of floor on the Demo phase. Its just when i go to floor plan, i cant select that piece of cut floor to override it and make it transparent. When i turn the Phase filter to show only demo in the floor plan, the cut piece of floor doesnt show at all which doesnt make any sense.
Okay, bear with me...
If you're in the new construction phase, where you place the void cut in the floor, what would you expect see with Phase Filter Show Demo+New? Only what you actually placed in the new construction phase. The void cut, if created and demo'd in the new construction phase, wouldn't even register.
No?
...out of curiosity, how do you "select that piece of cut floor to override it and make it transparent" ? There is nothing to make transparent.
Model the cut as part of the floor and demolish it in new phase... only then you can see that part in demo..
with the view set to show new and demo, i would expect to see the new stairs and the piece of floor that is being cut out but only show the new stairs and the cut floor without a demo piece of floor. I have attached an image showing the piece of floor that is being cut out. This view phase filter is set to show new, previous and demo phase.
Thanks Ganesh
I have modeled the inplace void to match the outline of the stair, in the new construction phase and made the cut in the new phase. i have attached an image showing the same format as your previous image
WHAT?! @Corsten.Au cheated improvised?!
Good man. ![]()
I'm still mulling over the concept of selecting a "piece of cut floor [a VOID] to override it and make it transparent". Sure is making my head hurt. I think the the void cut is there (and selectable, if you try) in Plan View, but it just doesn't know what it is yet. Is it new or demo or...Memorex? (he, he. Anybody remember that commercial?)

Food for thought
1. Logically is there a way to " Demolish " a Void?
I feel answer is : No
2. To demolish certain part of Floor ( any element ) theres should be something in 3D (solid, not void )
so that it can be demolished...
3. That part of floor can be created using ' Parts ", but i feel it will be such a tedious process
to master the skill to use " Parts " and then fix phase, fix material of demo, fix views etc..
4. Simple solution would be to create that part of floor, and demolish it in new construction..
its just about logic cause we cannot argue with Revit itself... yeah ![]()
@barthbradley we cheat with Revit all the time ![]()
Im not telling the void to be demolished. I am just drawing the void where i want it to cut out of the existing element and then telling the Void to cut the existing element as shown below using a roof for example, shows me the demolished piece of roofing. i hadnt really though about doing it your way Ganesh but it makes sense and works well. Much appreciated . To address the transparency of the demolished object, when something goes to a demolished layer, it can often hide other things such as flooring hatches, plumbing items etc so we override any demolished item to be transparent in each view separately. As per the view below showing the demolished roofing, i would select that piece of roof in an elevation and make it transparent using the override by element so that it doesnt hide any of my new structure for that project.
Ha! Fun thread.
I think what's going on here, is that you're dealing with an infill because of the Phase Filter settings. Kind of what i was alluding to before when I said the void doesn't know what it is (..maybe it's "Memorex"). Anyways, it seem to me that something of the void would still be "selectable" in the view. Maybe you can't see it, but I suspect something is there nonetheless. Tab select around the area it should be. Betcha you pick up something. Keep in mind the the void has no "edges" in that Phase Filter status, so selection of it is going to be tough.
That would be great to see if you have any issues in revit 2019. I have found revit 2019 to be quite "buggy" so far and i wonder if it is something not working quite right with Revit 2019. I drew that set of stairs in the images above and had lots of issues. i used the "pick line"tool to create my stair tread/ boundary's etc and revit would only make half the stair. I had to use the "draw line" tool to make the stairs build correctly.

Here is a 2019 test file. It still works. Use Unjoin geometry and click on the original floor to separate the non-demo and demo portions, then you will be able to select the demolished portion of the floor to graphics override it.
With that said, @Corsten.Au approach is a more common way to do it.
Thanks ToanDN
The Unjoin tool did exactly what i am after!! but i think your right in that @ganesh approach is a more user friendly and probably a better approach to deal with the cut. Turns out some of my other colleagues use @ganesh approach in it works well for them. I dont like to edit the existing model in anyway which why is why i use voids as they leave the model exactly as it was once you delete the void but i think i will be changing my mindset slightly for dealing with floors and potentially other elements.
Thanks everyone for your help, time and advice on the matter. much appreciated
