Cuttable Objects

Why are only certain family categories cuttable?  Can families be given a "cuttable" yes/no parameter so we don't have to keep moving families to categories that do not make sense?

Hi mpwuzhere,

Thank you for participating in Revit Answer Day! In part, the purpose of non-cuttable families has to do with bettering performance. For example, there is generally little need to cut through furniture families. Regenerating every furniture family whenever you switch between views or cut a section would slow down the workflow. The list below illustrates all of the family categories that are currently non-cuttable.

  • Balusters
  • Detail Items
  • Electrical Equipment
  • Electrical Fixtures
  • Entourage
  • Furniture
  • Furniture Systems
  • Lighting Fixtures
  • Mechanical Equipment
  • Parking
  • Planting
  • Plumbing Fixtures
  • Specialty Equipment

Are you a member of the beta program? https://beta.autodesk.com/

Do you have suggestions for specific categories that you think should be considered for cutting? If so, you can add this request to our wishlist.

Thanks again!

Hi Jill,

As Michael said, the cuttable/non-cuttable property should be a parameter inside a family, left to user choice.
If Revit was used in a perfect world and designed just for Architects and just used only in the US and everyone would use exactly the same company drafting standards, the current cuttabe/non-cuttable by category property could potentially work.
But because Revit is being used by different companies with different standards, different disciplines in multiple countries, so you will never be able to find a middle ground.

I've already send a request, but I just wanted to highlight this again that it would be a great improvement for us.

Thanks,

Maciej

Jill,
I wholeheartedly agree with the request here. Also, if I may suggest a few categories:
- Vertical Transportation (Elevators/escalators)
- Signage
- Roads (you have one now, but its unused. We need a modern tool that adoptes to GPS and Geographic data and models roads and ramps etc.)
- Curtain Walls - yes, please separate from walls
- Structural Walls - yes, please yada yada as above

Thanks
B

Yes, I am a member...

Have recently been asked to show furniture in sections, had to be moved to a Generic Model Category.

Lighting Fixtures, had to be moved to Generic Model.

Specialty Equipment, ditto.

So I had to create a bunch of subcategories that people have to remember to modify instead of looking at the category they should be in, and all the filters and view templates are now messed up because I had to create those subcategories.

Cuttable families need a rethink...  As per your own White Paper..."Families are lighter than groups", but if I cut a plumbing fixture family with multiple nested items I see everything in the family and not just what is in view of the section or elevation.  So I have to put that it in a different category too.

Hello!

Can you add these categories to the Wishlist regarding family categories to be cut? It helps us to have a record of the requested categories specifically.

Thanks!

Hi all,

Thank you for the feedback! I'm going to forward your requests on to the team that works with families to discuss / re-visit this issue. Would you prefer making the cuttable / non-cuttable behavior a parametric option in the family, or would you prefer this be done by category?

Thanks!

By family, similar to Cuts With Void When Loaded

What Brian said...per family.

Absolutely by family! Yes, there is the workaround to set them as generic models, and yes, we can use view filters to control visibility. But what about schedules and tags?!? It just makes for a huge mess.

Oh, my favorite topic! Also - try to add voids in the un-cuttable family (that is, if the family was meant to have a void or two - as in a box). That way in section you can get something close to what you want. Painful, but true.
