Cut Wall Geometry with Family

Hello everyone

Is there a way to cut the wall geometry with a family?

Note: The family is a column category and the height is less than the wall.

Family and example of the ovelapping wall are attached bellow.

Also, one additional question related to the same family.

Is there a way to control the height of the extrusion in the family, so that,  in the properties you can insert a level as a Top Constraint, similar to a wall, instead of controlling the height with a dimension parameter.

I will answer Question 2 first...To have parameters for Base constrain and top constraint, the family needs to be modeled originally in a Column Family where you have the top and base levels in the template and you lock to them the top and bottom of the extrusion ...this family wasn't. It has been modeled maybe as a generic model and then that category was changed in Family Category dialog

Cut overlapping walls: to do that you need to

  1. model a void in the family
  2. this void should not cut the geometry of the family
  3. You need to check the box "Cut with Voids when loaded"
  4. While at it, you can add reference planes in a lateral view and associate it with a Height parameter
  5. Lock all extrusions to that ref plane

PS: I modeled the void using Sweep ...you can do that using an extrusion too

@RDAOU Is there a da.pngda1.pngreason why the material pattern changes when the family is in touch with a wall?

Its how the family category behaves when joind to walls.  Your family is based on Column ... Archtectural columns category that is.

Go to modify tab >>> Join Geometry >> Switch Join Order

That should give you the result you want I guess

Inkedda3_LI.jpg@RDAOU the closed I can get, where the solid gray color of the circles is missing.

Besides, is there a way to solve the wrapping on the left side of the family? The wall wrapping setting at inserts is set to "BOTH".

Im not sure i understand  the first question...if u mean the cut pattern of the circles, maybe you should Check in section if the circles are cut by the view cut plane....if they are not then maybe they are not associated with the height parameter of the family... otherwise upload the file so I can have a look

For the wall...extend it to overlap the wall of the family and use join

@RDAOU

The project is organized in groups because the groups repeat on multiple levels.

I have the walls in one group and the blocks (column families) in separate one.

Appart from the wrapping of the overlapping wall, the main issue I have is that, the groups, will not performe the same on different levels when modifed in one particular level.

For example, when I cut the part of the wall on level 1, the cut is reset on level 2, or when I clean the material pattern with SWITCH JOIN ORDER on level 2, the cut is reset on level 1.

If those walls must be in groups, then Different conditions might require different groups ... so you would need duplicate some

Alternatively you might want to explore assemblies
