Cut pattern of imported 3dm file (Site category) does not work..?

Hello,

I have imported a 3DM file, and while I can assign to it a material, the cut patterns do not apply to it. Only surface.

I thought the Site category was cuttable?

What am I missing? How to control the cut graphics and appearance?

See project attached, and screen shots.

Thank you

Try Generic Models category.

Site works just fine

  • Edit the in-place
  • Explode the 3DM.
  • select the element assign a material normally using a parameter
  • Associate that parameter to the In-Place Site Family
  • Finish the in place component

This way you can change its material straight from the model without in-place editing

Edit: See GIF below

If you prefer it to be more generic, you can assign the exploded geometry to a Site Subcategory in lieu of assigning material parameters

Thank you, I was hoping to avoid exploding imports...

Also, why is the surface patterns/appearance working but not the cut?

And, corollary question, where is the gray cut fill coming from?

Why exactly are you trying to avoid exploding 3dm file if I may ask? There is nothing wrong in doing that.

  • A 3dm falling under CAD does not mean it is a DWG (Even though, exploding DWG is also not always bad)
  • You can also import the 3dm Directly into the model and the family Category gets assigned to it without needing an in-place model.
  • The use an In-Place is the DWG impost workflow habit, promoted by many whenever CAD is mentioned
  • The advantages of importing into an in-place or a family .rfa in case of 3dm and .SAT are
    1. allows user to explode the form and convert to a are native Revit geometry
    2. gives  access to subcategories
    3. allows user to explode and assign parameter you can control...
    4. ie: you avoiding the explode means you are giving away the advantage.

Otherwise, use the RhinoInside.Revit plug-in from Rhino which will bring it into Revit and you wont have to worry if it is exploded or not exploded.

Missed your question why the cut pattern does not apply to imported category:

  • GO to visibility graphics and check what is available for override
  • When cut pattern is not available it means it is not accessible and the pattern is inherited from original object

Now see below the behavior of a 3DM imported directly into the projecy (no in-place and no Family)
