Customize Cabinet Families

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best approach to customizing cabinet families? For instance, I would like to add shelves to my base and upper cabinets so they appear in section, and have a base cabinet that has a deep drawer at the bottom only with an open space above. I have been working on creating my own families, but am looking for a faster way if one exists. Thank you.

We downloaded families from AWS...http://www.aws-cds.com/ and then modified them with our own custom parameters. There were some families that we had to "fix", but for the most part they are usable.

My approach would be to model volumetric families, with all the parameters
I may need, and detail everything else in draft views to avoid making a
mess with the families and waste time.
