Curtain Wall Filter

Let's just start w noting that filters in revit are another one of those terrible ****ing features revit never bothered to think through.

I want to select a curtain wall and have it, and only it, appear on a given view from the moment I create the view and forever more.

1) If I simply make a selection filter I cannot use this filter in order to make it, and only it, appear as this is not how the VG options work. I can only hide or show this selection using the VG filter options.  A third option - hide everything but the selection - would be an obvious addition here. In fact it would be more useful than all the other features combined.  **** you revit.

2) I can Load Selection and then Isolate and then lock the Isolation. But if I add anything to my model in the future these items will also show up, leaving me with the task of cleaning up the view over and over again using this Selection.

3) I cannot create a rules based filter that hides everything but this curtain wall unfortunately, as the selection of the curtain wall in the rules based filter Does Not Work. The Type Name doesn't work, the type mark doesn't work etc... I really do wonder why saved selection sets can't be utilized in rules based filters. Then I remember, this is revit.

4) If I try to get around this by creating an assembly, well I can't create an assembly from a curtain wall.

5) If I try to get around this by selecting every item in the curtain wall and giving them a type or a unique name that I can then create a filter for, this becomes more work than the clean-up itself. Especially considering that I would have to go through the entire goddamn naming process with every filter.

At this point, this just seems insane. What do I do?

What the heck is the version of Revit you are using?  I've been able to do everything you are saying you can't do, since I started using Revit.

I am using 2020, just described what the issues were.

Is there a button to use filters the way I'm describing?

Why would curtain walls not function in the usual rule based way - if I name a curtain wall type, should I not be able to utilize this name as a filter excluding everything else?

Doesn't work.

If I use type name, I would expect it to include everything in my curtain wall. It seems to include nothing.

If I use type mark - it only includes the window panes, not the mullions or the casework.  I then have to create type marks and the required types for all my mullions and casework,  which is beyond ****ing annoying.

Is there not a way of using  saved selections as the selection in my rules based filter?

Why is type name, and it is the right name, not working as a selection?

Is there a way of solving the issue?

It does. Maybe something is going on at your end?  Could be related to hierarchy.

If I use the "type name" selector type, set the logic to "equal" and then go to VG and turn off visibility, it selects my curtain wall and hides it as expected.

If I use the "type name" selector type, set the logic to "does not equal" and then go to VG and turn off visibility, it hides everything, including the curtain wall. WTF?

I don't see how hierarchy would have something to do with this.

I'm not experiencing the same behavior as you describe.

Hierarchy would apply if you have other, higher priority, overrides in place. Did you read the Link I provided?

It may not have anything to do with it. I just threw it out there for consideration. Problem is, that I can't replicate what you are describing so it's hard for me to troubleshoot. Post your file. Maybe that would help.
