Creating Wall Sections

When creating ¾” scale wall sections, is it better to cut a section in plan using the Section Tool, or to window a callout area on a smaller scale overall section, or does it matter?

Draw a section cut in the floor plan gives you control where the cut line is. Draw a call-out in a parent section inherits the cut line location of the parent view (you can still control view depth though). I use both.

It does matter. When you create a wall section, cut the section in plan view with the section type indicated as "Wall Section". This has some advantages: your wall section is indicated in plan views, your view is classified in the project broswer under "Wall Section", and you can apply a view template to the view type, and the wall section symbol can be different from building sections.

You can classify a call-out View from a Building Section as a Wall Section as well.  That shouldn't be a factor.

Thank you both. Very helpful!

Yes, but if you notice, the view that you did as a callout does not create a mark for the wall section in plan, because that callout-section view tool is available when you are already in a section view. So it is simply a callout of a wall section, not a new wall section marked on the plan view. That's my point.

How do you differentiate between a 'Building Section' and 'Wall Section' in the Project Browser? I'm using v2017

Does your Browser not look like this?  Did you assign the different Section types to different views?

I only have 'Sections (Building Sections)' and cannot find where to assign to "Wall Sections;

You need to highlight the sections or call-outs, and change their category from the View Properties palette drop-down list.

I do not have the Wall Section option you show in your screen grab, Just Detail Call Out and Building Section

You can create it by duplicating Building Section.  Or use transfer project standards to get it from a project already has Wall Section type.

I am having no luck Transferring a Wall Section from one project to mine. I opened a new project, cut a section, changed it from a Building Section to a Wall Section, and checked the box for Section Type in the Select Items To Copy window. No luck. What's the correct procedure?

Sounds like a correct procedure so I am not sure what is going on. Maybe just copy the Wall section cut object from Project2 and paste on your project.

Start a new building section, go to Edit Type > Duplicate > provide the new name: Wall Section. That's all you need to create a new type of section.

Optionally (recommended) create a different symbol for the wall section type.
