Creating Soft Exterior Shadows

Does anyone have some basic thoughts on how to create effective exterior soft shadows when rendering with Revit.  I know when I have wanted this effect in Rhino  I have used a fairly large rectangular light source.  I've also heard talk of a soft shadow setting but I haven't seen anything particularly effective in Revit 2017.  I've used the ambient shadows setting with 3d views that weren't rendered but that setting doesn't seem to carry over to rendering.  Should I creat a large artificial exterior light source and turn off the sun?  Any help getting the renders took look a little less canned is greatly appreciated.

Try:

To adjust the intensity of sun, indirect light, or shadows

  1. On the View Control Bar, click  Visual StyleGraphic Display Options.
  2. In the Graphic Display Options dialog, under Lighting, move the Sun slider or enter a value between 0 and 100 to change the brightness of the direct light.
  3. For Ambient Light, move the slider or enter a value between 0 and 100 to change the brightness of the ambient light.
  4. Under Shadows, move the Shadow slider or enter a value between 0 and 100 to change the darkness of the shadows.
  5. Click OK.

Thank you.  I think the ambient light setting is not something that pertains to an actual rendering.  You are right that I'm looking for the softer look in a rendering that you find with this setting when it is applied to one of the other graphic representations.  Let me know if I've missed some change in the settings recently.  I tried this a couple months ago.  Has it changed?
