creating multi object family with different display options

Hey everyone,

I am new to Revit and still trying to figure out the different ways to get the results that I want.

Currently I have an assembly file in solidworks, that is very comlex and cannot be recreated in revit given time restraintes, that I have exported from solidworks as a .sat file. I have 5 different parts within the file and I am planning on importing them into revit individually. What I need is for the objects to be able to section when I take a section view of them and I need to add MEP (pipe) connections to some of the faces.

What I would like to do is import them all into a single family, I'm pretty sure the best family to import them into will be a generic family, and then somehow setup two different color schemes. What I want is for two of the objects to appear gray, halftone, or transparent (ideally halftone I think). The other three objects I want to appear as black lines. Technically the only objects that need to be section-able are the two objects that are halftone.

I was hoping there is some way to used nested families or just import all the cad files into one family and set up the graphics. There will also be a scenario where I need to hide one of the halftone objects in a few of the views.

Thank you for your help, unfortunately I can't provide a picture or the files since this is for a client but if someone could offer some advice that would be great.

Thank you, Peter

You may run into trouble with importing the objects. I would make sure that Revit will accept them before addressing anything else at this point. You may be forced into creating some or even all of them in Revit. Once that is done, the visibility issues should be easy.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Rob thank you for the reply. I have imported all the objects into revit and currently have a setup that works in the project. I had to save the ASCI solid in the .sat version 7 for autodesk to accept that, but once I did that I had no problems.

I also know that I can add MEP connections in the generic family template, so currently I just need help with the visibility settings.

Thank you, Peter

Unfortunately, I have not worked with imported objects much and I didn't actually read your entire post about your objective. The visibility properties you are looking for may not be possible.

If you can create and assign categories for each of the objects that need visibility control, you could control them in V/G settings by view.

That's all I got for now.

Good luck.

Rob,

Thank you for your help, I have tried creating subcategories but I will look into it more.

If anyone else has any experience with imported CAD models and defining display options that would be great.
