Creating Family that Displays Area In View

Have another thread that this need is buried in so thought makes sense to start a new one.....

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/revit-architecture-forum/approaching-2d-conceptual-site-layouts/td-p/...

ToanD & LMaas have started addressing this in this thread and the "tags?" they are using are getting close to what I'm looking to do.

I want to be able to create a family (both standard family and a massing "box" family) that display area in the view that it is dropped into.

In other words.... When I place a cube in a view, I want to be able to see the area listed on the cube.

The text ideally will be able to be viewed in plan, Elevation, and 3D.

Preference is to have this happen "automatically" but If I can figure out a way to use a tag to do this that would be helpful as well.

Hoping that once I figure out how to do this I can extrapolate and figure out a way to have the dimensions (24x36) and also the name (Building Type 1) display as well.

Anyone willing to help me get started with this?

Tag on Placement automatic enough for you?

Besides that, you can also do this:

Thanks Barth-

Yes, something along those lines could work. Have been experimenting with it/ trying to recreate what you are showing all morning but right now kind of beating my head against a wall. Because of everything described below I'm thinking about punting to the idea immediately below.....

Do you think I can have any success with the following?

I have been able to create a filled region that I have been able to assign the parameters of Length, Width & Building Name To. Problem is that when I enter info into these "fields?" the shape is not recognizing the input. For the Building Name it's telling me it needs to start with =...

Here's what I want to do at this moment....

  • I'm hoping I can get this filled region and parameters to a place that I can at least enter the dimensions in the properties palette and have the region update.
  • Assign instance based materials to the filled region via the palette (think I can handle this)
  • Assign instance based name in the pallet.
  • Once all of this is done, Tag the filled region and have it display all the parameters that I assign.
  • If I update the parameters in the properties palette, the tag updates as well.
  • Be able to copy paste these shapes from project to project and have the same functionality.

Here are some of the issues I'm having:

  1. I can get tag on placement button to show up for some families but not for all.
  2. For my box mass family not able to see the option to place that way.
  3. Went into the family to find some parameter or switch that would allow that to happen but no luck this end,
  4. Started thinking it could be tag related, so looked there as well, but no dice.
  5. Was able to figure out that I needed to load a tag family specific to the Mass families and assign that tag type to masses. Got the tags to work (not tag on insert).
  6. So, started playing around with the tag types to see if I could figure out how to get the area, dimensions (24x36), and name of the "building" to show up in the tag. Had some success with this but....
    1. Couldn't figure out a way to get the dimensions to read. The hope was that I could enter dimensions for the box and have those ultimately show up in the tag.
    2. Thought maybe I would need to set the parameters for the family type first before I could get the tag to read and update whatever it displays..... made sense to me anyway.
    3. Messed around with this and parameter choices that I need are not available (seems to be the case for a lot of similar type stuff I'm trying to do.
    4. Stumbled on "project parameters" and looked through that some and thought I had found a way to create parameters of any type for any type of family.... but struggling.
    5. While I was able to get the area parameter I assigned to read I was only able to get the sf parameter to read for the cube. Was hoping that I could flatten the cube (0 height in that parameter) and have it just read the sf of the rectangle. Aint happening right now for me.
    6. Struggling with keeping family parameters outside of the project inside a family vs inside of the project and a family vs  inside of a family inside of a project (think text assigned to a tag and the items in the text box).
  7. So, bottom line is I'm probably more confused about how to approach all of this than I need to be and thinking the best approach might be to back up and figure out a way to just assign tags that have the info I'm looking to present to 2D objects.... so less variables for me to contend with.
    1. Even if I could just get a proper tag set up that would contain all the info I'm looking to have for the family I'm trying to notate that would be progress.
    2. So, Went back to creating filled regions and attempting to assign project parameters to the filled region that would allow me to do some of this..... but not even certain this can be done.... though I started thinking so as I was working with things.

I'm thinking I could use a good thorough tutorial on "all" aspects of parameters.... any ideas? Probably will start another thread regarding....

Just stumbled on this..... Maybe with a "2D Line Based Detail Component"?
