Creating a Sweep Form along mulitple directions in one Sweep

Can it be done? For this example I will use the shape 'H'

At the moment we would have to draw 3 different Sweeps for this, but why can it not be drawn in one go. It is not a complex shape and the joins would be more realistic than joining 3 separate sweeps (which only really joins them but does not trim them).

I am considering proposing an idea but wanted to check if there is a workaround of any kind, or whether it would be too much for Revit to handle. Would this be asking for too much?

... not that I know

... you are right,  to not draw over lines you need to do it in three parts

you should be able to use the sweep command to create this form.  When you are in the command, use the Pick Line method to select the edges of the "H."  Make sure the magenta lines are creating a continuous series of lines....not broken.

No. There is no H. The H is created by the pink lines. Its an example. Take football posts for instance. If I wanted to create a circular shape along the H, then it can not be done in one sweep. Don't get caught up in the example. Look at the bigger picture.

You can do an "N".  That's pretty darn close.  Smiley (zwinkernd)

some other letter of the alphabet you can do: C, D, I, J, L, M, O, P (?), U, V, W, Z (Helvetica)

...maybe R too.

If I wanted to pick lines along an existing shape, then I would just do exactly that.

If I wanted to create an outline shape, then I just do exactly that.

What I would like to see in Revit is to remove the 'more than one loop not allowed' error. Enabling the profile to follow any shape of unclosed 2D lines.

That's why I compared it to football posts. Neither of those examples give me what I want. Again, don't get hung up on the example. I am not trying to produce a H in every case.

Your magenta lines as sketched will not work.  Rules of thumb when in sketchmode:

- One continuous set of lines (closed or open) for sweeps

- no gaps

- no stray lines

- no intersecting lines

The sweep command effectively takes a profile you create such as a circle, square, etc. and "extrudes" it on a non-linear path in a single direction.  It doesn't sweep the profile in multiple directions.  Depending on what you are trying to create, you will have to either use multiple boolean operations or a different boolean operation.

Just to be clear, @Kev_D; I was clowning with you.  I get what you are asking.  You're looking for a way to avoid the extra step of joining sweeps together.  That's exhausting work.  Smiley (zwinkernd)

Thank you

And, yes I know all the rules. But my post is about me wanting to put forward an 'Idea' to introduce some sort of sweep that can achieve this. I asked here for replies as I am not familiar with the API and whether this can be achieved. I am not trying to create a H.

Now that we are on the same page, who would it be exhausting for? Those who create Revit. Is it a code issue? Could Revit handle it?

You're probably right.  I mean, I can "code" a hatch pattern do that.

Okay, you win. I'm on your side now.  Smiley (zwinkernd)

I didn't know it was a game, but I'll take the win anyway.  Smiley (zwinkernd)

I might throw this as an idea and see where it leads.

Thanks to all for your inputs
