Create a new Category

Good afternoon colleagues,

I know Revit has everything already organized by "Model Category" and Annotation Category". Is there any way to create a completely new "Category" that Revit doesn't have or that something that a client needs to conform to their project category list?

Example, There is a "Furniture Category" I need another "Furniture Category_2" in my Model Category list, where I can run schedule information, etc.

Right now I'm using "Furniture Systems" to get by.

Thanks

You can't add Parent Categories, but you add Subcategories.

But do you really need to start adding a bunch of new "client-specific" subcategories to get to where you want to go?  What do mean exactly by "conform to [client] project category list"?  Give me an example.

There are multiple ways to filter a schedule without changing category.

Note that each category also has hard-coded parameters specific to that category. So using a different main category as a workaround can have other unintended consequences.

You could use one of the existing parameters or create a new shared parameter to add to furniture if you want to filter schedules. I use the "Type Comments" parameter to separate out different mechanical and other equipment. For example, I call them "hydronic pumps", "boilers", and so on and that way I can create a pump schedule and don't have the boilers or other "mechanical equipment" elements in schedule.

Every few years Revit adds more of the hard-coded categories. But this is out of your control, and it is unlikely they create a redundant furniture category. It basically is what it is, and we have to live with it.

Yes, that was the answer I wanted to know. Do I want to start adding new parent categories?, the more I add the more problems I will end with.

A client project list, I have a client that has wood shelving that needs to be in it own schedule and metal shelving that needs to be in it own schedule but the Category list only gives you "Furniture" or "Furniture Systems".

Thanks that answers my question.
