CPU-fan speeds up when opening material Library (revit 2016 + 2017)

Hi  There,

When I open the Material Library in revit 2016 and 2017.2, the cpu temperature is rising very fast. The fan starts running fast, and in a couple of cases my pc shuts down. The fan speeds down after shutting down revit.

It happens in a complex project, aswell for a new project made without a template....

What can I do?

Thanks for your help.

Niels

This has nothing to do with Revit, it's just a case of your CPU overheating.

Try just to google 'cpu overheating problem' or something like that?

Maybe its full of dust or a casefans don't work anymore, there are so many possible ways a cpu can overheat.

Hi Jeroen,

Thanks for your reply.

The processor and the fan are new (2 months), so no dust. And in my case the overheating only happens when opening this material library.  Not when a complex project is opened. So imho it is something revit is causses.

Hi

In case it's a brand new pc (or at least the cpu with fan), dust will not be a problem ofcourse.

Your cpu shouldn't work harden than it can disperse it's heat. So my guess is that the cpu is overclocked?

If everything is running on stock clockspeed and multipliers, run benchmarks. With this, you should get back to the firm that built the pc.

If it's not the case that the cpu is overclocked, I really don't know how a brand new cpu can get overheated by Revit.

Hi @jeroen_vanmassenhove

It's been a while and I'm checking back to see if your issue is resolved?

In some PC's graphics card (with temperature ranges) have fans attached.  Overheating can happen for several reasons, there are few tools available online that check your CPU temperature. Best bet is to have a dust free case and see that your unit is properly ventilated.

Hi @Viveka_CD

Very kind of you to do a follow up of this problem, but you tagged the wrong person. It wasn't my problem, I just suggested some things. You should tag @Anonymous to get his attention (which I just did :D)

Kind regards

Hi @Viveka_CD
The problem is not solved yet.
As mentioned to Jeroen, my pc is brand-new. Dust can not be the problem. My pc only starts to sound like a leaf-blower when I start working in the Material Library...
Kind Regards

Hi @Anonymous

Does this occur only when you access material library and not during other times?

@Anonymous also try HWMonitor - a hardware monitoring program that reads PC systems main health sensors: voltages, temperatures, fans speed.

Copper for enhances thermal conductivity, so maybe give it a shot with one of these products (a heat sink) or a thermal paste? But do your research before you make the choice to go for it.

Also, What is your graphics card configuration?

Hi Veveka,
Thanks for your post, indirectly it gave me the solution. The CPU (AMD Rizen 5 X1600) caused the issue.
On the motherboard the CPU-setting was wrong. It was standard configured, which means "auto settings" for CPU voltage. On the AMD-forum users advised to have a fixed CPU voltage (1.375V).
When I was scrolling in the library de CPU voltage was rising, that caused the temp rising, and PC-craches. With he fixed CPU voltage, the temp was stable...

Or, as I suggested, that meant that the CPU is overclocked...

Oh well, glad you solved your issue and you can continue to work without problems!

Hi Jeroen,

The CPU was overclocked by the motherboard (standard settings), that's correct. But imho is overclocking something you do on purpose... So that's why I thought it was not the reason....

Hi @Anonymous

I am glad to hear that. Smiley Happy

I've marked your response as the solution as well. That's quite a technical solutionSmiley Happy

I was breezing through this article regarding a similar issue we had this morning - coolers and heated intel CPU's
