Counter Family with independent backsplash

Hi there.  I am trying to create a countertop family.  Linear with a backsplash.  Is there a way I can incorporate shape handles so that I can re-size and/or move the backsplash independently?  I have attached my family with the progress so far.  I'm at the point where, whne working in the model, I can change the dimension of the backsplash using the parameters, but it is always snapped to the center of the counter, which isn't my goal.  There are instances where I would want to extend the backsplash past one edge of the counter or the other or have a shorter backsplash length and positioned to the left or right.  So essentially I'd like the backsplash to have total independence without having it be it's own family (just to save time loading and drawing).  I feel like I'm close???

Sure. Constrain the geometry to Ref. Planes or Ref. Lines, and pull a dimension between the Refs and then label the dimension with an INSTANCE parameter.  Now you'll have shape handles for the geometry in the Project.

Like this?  Load this Famiy into into Project. In Plan and Elevation Views you'll see Shape Handles (blue arrows) which you can drag to resize the Backsplash dynamically -- or you can enter a Length value directly in the Parameter field.   If you want the Shape Handles to show up in 3D View as well, then swap out the Ref. Planes for Ref. Lines in the Family, and constrain the geometry and its Symbolic Linework to these Ref. Lines.
