I have dozens of storefront elevations that get detail references all around. It is way, way easier to cut and paste the four references into each view, clean them up and modify the references, than to create them from scratch. But although the horizontal references work OK (they are bunched up, but I can deal with that), the vertical ones turn into callouts and I can't figure any way to get them to revert back to detail references. Even the type properties of the "callouts" say that they have the identical properties as the detail references. See attached image. Why is this happening and what, if anything, can I do about it? TIA.

That is because the view you copy from and the view you paste onto are not parallel. Understanding that might give you enough of a hint to deal with it. For instance, copy paste one of the bunching up horizontal ones on the same view and rotate it.
You are correct Toan, they are not. My workaround was just to copy/paste one jamb detail reference and then copy that one around. But good to know it may work where the views are parallel. Most of them are.
