Copy/Monitor - But don't monitor

Looking for anyone to confirm for me that copy/monitor is indeed as useless as it seems.  We have copy/monitored all of our structural columns.  Upon receiving the new structural model from our engineer we linked in the new model and ran a coordination review.  Coordination review indicates no major changes even though the column sizes have been changed in the structural model, and they are still monitored.  Could it be, that among the terribly designed elements of this tool, a "monitored" column does not actually monitor the size of the element or alert the user of changes in the dimensions of a column???  At this point without being able to monitor beams, columns sizes, or structural walls I'm left wondering what is the point of this tool at all?  What possible use case is left?

Attachments show the 24"x24" monitored column selected and the 20x30 column in the linked structural model in red.  Monitor link is still established but no error is shown for the change in size.

This forum is about solutions. The forums for new features and functionality are elsewhere where you can find tons of posts requesting more user control for existing functions.

Automation is a wonderful thing but I couldn't help but notice that you wouldn't mind editing the parameters manually. So, what you are looking for is a simple notification to check the changes in the linked file. You are not, by any stretch of the imagination,  limited to a single workflow to coordinate such changes.

My favorite is a notification directly from the user or the person directing the user. Cool stuff and it works.

Well for concrete structure that's a different sort of issue than steel structure since joining geometry isn't nearly the factor for steel as it might be for concrete.

Automatic is a rabbit hole of undetermined depth and complexity. The software solutions we get never cover every iteration we can throw at them. If there is a consistent repeated process that can be defined well and used by many the chances of it getting included improves...

Yes, what I'm looking for is a copy/monitor tool that actually monitors the elements.

Autodesk describes the copy monitor tool on its help page as follows:

"When collaborating on a project with other teams, use the Copy/Monitor tool to monitor and coordinate changes to important elements of the design."

I would like to do that and use the information encoded in a BIM to coordinate between disciplines more efficiently.  If my structural engineer is sending me every column dimension change directly we might as well be hand drafting at that point because the information contained within the building model is not useable.  This isn't just automation for its own sake.  We are trying to use the information and technology available to work more efficiently and reduce the risk of errors in our drawings.

The documentation for all things never does a perfect job. The description is very general, describing the intent but without delving into each categories behavior and purpose. Executive summaries, always attempt to distill the broad purpose or data provided in a report. Help/documentation files are no different.

The copy/monitor function does what you expect for levels and grids. It does not do that for columns because they designed it that way...because user input and their own experience said they should do it this way. Your expectations and goals are different...no surprise really. That's true for nearly everything in life. The developers know in advance that every solution they provide will run into someone that doesn't agree with it's approach. They try hard to meet the needs as many users as they can.

In this case, you have to go the Revit Ideas path to get your preferences in front of them to make them reconsider their decision. In the short term consider creating/buying a 3rd party application to compare columns in the same location and different types.

You are telling me that the Autodesk developers thought the way to best serve the most number of users was to offer the ability to copy/monitor Nurse Call devices and Telephones but not structural beams?  You must have some connections at Autodesk because to an average user it is insane to think that this was designed this way on purpose.

Are you saying that they released the product with something not working as intended and have not fixed it in the many years since it's release? That is insane!

When Copy/Monitor and Coordination Review was introduced, at the arrival of Revit Structure 1 (in 2005), the only categories involved were Levels, Grids, Columns, Floors and Walls. The tool works as intended, based on the feedback of users and their own experience. The person that led the product's development was a structural engineer with many years of experience and then many years of structural engineering software design.

All software development defines a scope of work, identifying a problem to solve, and then works to reach their goals. It's very much like architecture and engineering projects. No building gets built without some misunderstanding or compromise. The way it works is precisely how they perceived the needs of the problem they were trying to solve. Looking back with 14 years of experience is naturally going to provide nearly everyone with a different perspective.

What you describe as insane was apparently not insane enough for Autodesk and it's staff to spend a lot of money on a brand new product that included these features as they are.

I know this is an old subject, but in case this issue is relevant to anyone, I usually use navisworks and compare the models for  different nwc files corresponding to different versions, and the result will be clearly highlighted for the changes. Hope this helps...
