So I duplicate a material and rename it. I change properties of the duplicated, renamed material, and the changes are applied to the original material. Is this normal? My friend said you have to "save as" on the new material, but I don't see any way to do that. using 2018.

Thanks everyone~

You need to assign a new Appearance asset, or duplicate the existing one to a new one.

Material ' Name " in ApperanceMaterial ' Name " in Apperance

This is tricky and most important to know how material works..

the " Name" shown in Appearance should be different to get different material..

In this Example, three materials are based on same Name " Generic(2) and hence

changing any properties will affect all the materials which are using " Generic (2)

But in the left panel, selecting a Material " Ex Analytical Floor Surface " in Graphics, you may control how it behaves

as surface pattern and cut pattern differently..

Duplicating like this wont create a new material, but it will be based on same "Generic(2)"

Duplicate in both sides, material and appearance, and use that + to add physical and thermal properties manually.Duplicate in both sides, material and appearance, and use that + to add physical and thermal properties manually.adding.JPG

Cheers!
