Convert Project Parameter to Shared Parameter

Is there a way to convert/upload Project Parameters to a Shared Parameters file?

If you have an ideas, may it be within the software or even a third party solution I would be interested. We currently have dozens (hundreds?) of project parameters that I would like to change to shared.  I can do it manually, but anything that would expedite even part of the process would be beneficial.

Thanks for the links!  Yes, I was able to track these down before posting my original question.  Unfortunately I can't seem to get them to work.   That doesn't mean it doesn't work, I just can't figure it out... I get error messages each time I try to leverage them.  Sadly, .NET isn't my area of expertise to even be able to troubleshoot.

I’ve found an extension (included with the Revit Extensions) that will convert family parameters into a shared parameter, but I’ve not seen an option (other than the posted links above) to convert project parameters into a shared parameter file.

What is the reason that you are looking to convert the project parameters into shared parameters?

Thanks for the question / help Lance.

On our Mechanical side, we have templates with dozens of project parameters.  This is generally OK, as it means as soon as you load a Revit family into one of those projects that was created with the templates it automatically inherits the parameters of the other families.

That being stated, our various design teams like to do things their own way. They may have their own families they like to use on a regular basis and they don't want every piece of equipment to have the same parameters as the other project teams as these may be parameters they never use.

This leaves us with two choices.... (1.) Do upkeep to multiple templates on a per project and per project team basis or (2.) Assign the parameters directly within the family libraries they use on a regular basis.

Currently all those parameters are created as Project Parameters.  I would like to have a combination of project parameters (for those parameters all the teams use) and shared parameters (for the discipline/project team specific parameters).

You can certainly argue there are workarounds for this situation, from just creating a shared paramaters file manually to deleting Project Parameters on a per project basis.  But if there was a solution where a handful of clicks would save a few hours worth of work of typing and creating parameter types (which isn't unrealistic once you consider the number of disciplines / offices we have) it would be greatly beneficial.

I found the following IMAGINiT blog post with more details on that extension that I mentioned previously (Shared Parameters Converter):

Revit: How to Get Shared Parameters from Project to Family

Note: While the page mentions transferring from the project to the family, from what I have found (at least in the 2016 version) it is reading the existing shared parameter file, and allowing you to push the shared parameters into many families at one time (you would need to specify the grouping and Instance/Type value for each parameter).

While this won't create the shared parameters for you, once created you could push them out to multiple families in one go (which seems like the more time consuming part of the process).

This addon is no longer available on AutoDesk's website. WHY? It would be extremly helpful. Why this is not native to Rvit is mind boggling. The beauty of bIm is supposed to be sharing information across projects. Without this app it becomes MUCH harder.

@Anonymous I’m still seeing the Revit Extensions available for download (and the Shared Parameters Converter Extension is part of this download).

Where are you looking for the add-in?

Please forgive me. I was looking on the AutoDesk addon's website. I found it in my open Revit session under extensions. It is awesome and does exactly what I want. Thank you for the follow-up.

Thank you for the update. It's great to hear that you are able to access the add-in and that it will do what you need.

Hi, could you please update this thread for Revit 2018? My drafter created a parameter as a project parameter and I need to convert it to a shared parameter so its info can appear in tags.  I see nothing at manage.autodesk.com about a download for "extensions". Please advise.

Hello @drubinoff

The 2018 Revit Extensions are available for download from the Manage page (and through the Autodesk Desktop App):

Revit® Extensions for Autodesk® Revit® 2018 (Released: 04/19/2017)

Note: This download is categorized as “other” so if you filter by extension, then you wouldn’t see this.

Hi

"Shared/Project Parameters" tool does not show up in Revit Extensions tab in my Revit 2017 and 2018 versions. While I used to use it in Revit 2016 version. Have Autodesk removed this feature from these versions?

Hi guys, is there any updates on this trend/question? I work with Revit 2021 and the extension is not accessible anymore (or I couldn’t find it). Is there any add-in (Autodesk or third party) to convert the selected project parameter to a shared parameter? Thanks

This appeared to be possible in earlier version os Revit but not anymore in 2024. Only on a workaround with DI Roots plug-in. Am I looking at this right?
