Controlling family performance

This may be a very basic question, but I am remaking some Revit components, that in the past have really slowed down the performance of our models. (eg. casework in multifamily). I have essentially stripped the casework to its most simple geometry and using symbolic lines to add some of the details that are missing. The performance difference is quite noticeable and I have been very pleased! However, while you can't tell that the family has been reduced when in 2D views, we do sometimes do isometric views and the highly simplified model is not the most attractive in 3D. I am wondering if I add some of the complexity back, but change the visibility so that it only shows in Fine Detail level, will I still maintain the performance benefits when the view is set to Course or Medium detail?

It will be the same as if you surfing through view with realist rendering and wireframe one. you will maintain benefits in other views which not showing heavy elements.

Results can vary. Why don't you try it out?

I'm fairly certain that the gains in performance will still be there in any view not set to fine.

Drafting is a breeze and Revit doesn't always work the way you think it should.

Hi @josh.hafel

As @RobDraw  says results will vary and testing will give you the best answers.

Some results I have found help improve performance of families in the past are:

  • Reduce the number of Model Lines
  • Remove overly complicated Formulas (especially in Arrays)
  • Remove Groups in Families

I'm not sure what type of projects you are working on, but if you are placing the same families repetitively, i.e. same kitchen in multiple apartments, you can always place simplified geometry in all kitchens except one, then use the complex family in the kitchen you want to show in isometric views and for your internal elevations etc.

Lastly also try having the complex geometry only visible in 3D?Visibility Settings.JPG

Good Luck
