Compound roof wrapping

Anonymous
Not applicable

Dear community,

I have noticed that wrapping the compound structure of a roof is not possible. However, I do want to connect the layers of my roof with my walls to make a continuous finishing layer, a continuous insulation layer, etc. Hopefully someone can help me with this problem and knows of a way to solve it.

Thanks in advance!

Hello.

There are different ways to do it. You would choose depending on the detail. Roof can be gabled, flat, overhang... Sketch the detail you need and ppl will give you solutions.

This would be quite easy with roof by extrusion, not so easy with roof by footprint.

We need to see your roof, it depends on how you want it.

I have attached my revit file as well as a screenshot in pdf of the roof in question (the yellowish building) for clarification. The roof will have multiple dormers as shown in the screenshot/revit file which for now do not yet have a roof but will have a flat roof.

If you re create your roof using roof by extrusion in an elevation, sketch the top edge of the roof profile.

See roof.jpg . Once you have done that your roof should look like roof1.jpg, then use the Linework tool (Modify tab>View panel) to override the line join and set to invisible, see roof2.jpg

Thanks, that's was exactly what I was looking for! But how does this work for the front and rear ends of the roof (the side shown in roof.jpg)?

You could use the material Paint tool (Modify tab > Geometry panel > paint)

So technically the ends will be faked

Hmm not ideal but for now I will make due with it. But is there another way to 'really' connect the ends as it should be?

You need to sketch section details which describe "as it should be". Use autocad or a pencil, photoshop, paper.... Even this detail can vary... Maybe you have a concealed gutter, maybe roof layers are not the same as the wall layers. Sketch the detail.

I don't think you will be able to connect the wall/roof layers at the ends.

I tried editing the end wall profile, so the wall extends up to the top of the roof but they still cannot connect and you end up with geometry overlap, so you would have to join the geometry. It wont be 100%.

Another way to do this would be in a section view, and 'fake' the detail using detail lines, masking regions and overriding lines (invisible)

Lock the profile to the roof?

Thanks, both of you! I think this is all I need to know for now. As of yet I'm not in the detailing phase of my design so when drawing the details I'll take all of this in account. The reason I asked it now is that I wanted to know how it will be done later on to prevent me from doing stupid things that will cost me time later on in the process.

Anyway, thanks again both of you that you took time for me to explain this (I appreciate it a lot) and I'll see to it that this post is solved!

You can use Mass and Wall by Face so that they wrap in all directions.

Oh nice! That looks somewhat like what I had in mind. Shame that I have added a lot of stuff since than so making the walls and roofs anew would cost me way to much time in this stage of the design. But I'll definitely keep it in mind for the next time. Thanks a lot!
