Column with different finishes

Hello!

I am learning currently learning how to use Revit and I have a question regarding columns. I am modeling a high rise building and I need my columns to have different finishes according to floor height : the first 7 floors I need the column's finish to be stone and after that I need the finish to be paint. 

I was wondering what is the best way to approach this.

As a starting point it is always good to check how it will made in the real world. Are those single columns or are they separate columns or is it a single core (structural) column with an (architectural) column 'wrapped' around.

If you approach it this way it gives you some clues how you possibly could solve it.

-Several different column types.

-Single structural column with architectural column around.

-Column with 'wall' wrapped around.

-Create your own column family

The problem with doing this overlapping method (besides from the scheduling aspect which will now account for double the number of columns and respective quantities) is that you get a display issue where there is a clash of hatches (see attachment).

Am I doing it wrong?

in this issue you need to edit your column family > untick join geometry in the properties > save > reload again > change your existing column with modified one. thanks
