Column w/ a custom cross-section? (Revit 2020)

Hi all,

I'm looking to place a column in my Revit model which has a (constant) cross-section, the dimensions of which I Know and want to specify.

The "Column" tool doesn't appear to have an option to do this, and the same can be said for the column's properties. Surely I'm missing something? Does anybody have any knowledge/tips in this area?

All help is appreciated :)!

Thanks in advance,

Do you mean a constant profile?  All columns modeled using extrusion or sweep should be like this unless you deliberately model them in a way that they have various profiles (using blend, swept blend, revolve, voids, etc).

Maybe I misunderstand you entirely.

If there's an option to extrude a sketch to make a column, that's exactly what I'm looking for!

I thought the extrude tool was only available in family files - do I need to make it in a family then somehow import it into my project file? Also would this force my columns to be a constant height?

Extrusion and other modeling tools are available in family and in-place model family editor.  If you intend to use the column in more than one location then definitely model it as a column family and load the family in your project normally (not somehow) as with all other external families.

The height can be fixed, stretchable, or defined by where you set the base and top level in the project.
