I am looking to see if I can have different graphics, ie colors, for columns located a floor above on a plan that is set "looking up". I am able to set the cut plane and view depth so that the top is at the differentiating level and when I go into the visibility/graphics I am able to change the color of the columns that are being cut, but not the ones that are above, which remain black. I have the view set to coarse and I am able to change the graphics by editing the values for stick symbol. I am using steel columns. Does anyone have any clues as to why I can't change the graphics of columns in projection, but only the ones that are cut?

Do you mean the columns are in the underlay?
Additional Settings=>Halftones/Underlays
Perhaps use a Filter for cut pattern/color of Columns by Level?
So in you view, the columns above would be colored.
Maybe this is what you are trying to achieve:
The magenta column is above level 2. The normal black one spans from Level 1 to Level 2.
If an object is between the top constraint (or bottom, if looking down) and View Depth parameter in the View Range dialog, it gets the line property from the <Beyond> line style.
Thank you BogMatei,
That seemed to accomplish what I wanted. I'm not sure why I couldn't just change the graphics of the "structural columns" in V/G, but so be it.
