Choosing a New Computer

Could anyone tell me what sort of performance I would get running Revit on a new Macbook Pro (in Parallels/Bootcamp unfortunately) with the following specs? Thanks

-- 3.3GHz dual-core Intel Core i7 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz

-- 16GB 2133MHz memory

-- 1TB PCIe-based SSD

-- Intel Iris Graphics 550

I would imagine that the answers you'll get here are going to be entirely subjective unless someone has your exact setup.  You should go grab a trial and see if it works for your needs.

Edit:  I'd check into bumping up your RAM too.

Its a basic setup!

First of all, I would recommend a PC not MAC... You have to remember that the MAC OS will also use up resources and the specs you provided are moderate to say the least. That being said, the MAC OS is going to drop performance from your hardware at about 20% or more. In addition, you should update your graphics card to a high end NVIDIA or AMD card because the Intel card will most likely cause some problems. If possible, get a faster processor as well, but you should be ok with what you have.

WTF?  Really?  I thought that was just a bad joke when I heard it.  What do they expect people to be pro's at?  Checking email?  Making websites for cats?

Well there is the new touch bar for easier emoticons...

I'd like to say Surface Book but, although about a year old, it has the same chip generation and 16GB limit*. I'm hoping Surface Book 2 (due US Spring) is a bit better in this respect. Mobile workstations run more desktop'ish spec which harms battery life, not really a factor when they are usually 'mobiled' between power sockets.

* Which shows how old the new MacBook is

Do not bother with a Mac for Revit.

You'll have to use Bootcamp to run Windows, which means that fundamentally you've spent twice as much money on better built, more reliable hardware to pretend to be a PC.

For Revit, a Mac makes no sense whatsoever. You would have to either log out of OS X and run windows all the time, or lose the multi-tasking on OS X, which means you would be better off sticking in BootCamp and running Windows permanently.

Don't even consider running Revit in a virtual machine. That's the equivalent of taking out maybe 20% of your RAM, and running your antivirus scanner permanently while running Revit.

Revit and Macs just don't mix well. Unless you want to burn money and buy something which is virtually obsolete in terms of PC hardware (and I'm a Mac user) then just buy a good HP Workstation and use a Mac laptop for non-BIM stuff.

The iMac doesn't have a good enough 3d graphics card, and by the time you've increased the specification to make it reasonable, you've got up to GBP3500, which would buy you an HP dual Xeon workstation with a Quadro video card. You're paying a lot more money for a less capable machine with less expandability.

The Mac Pro hasn't been updated since 2013, it would give you better graphics performance, but you would only be getting a 6 core machine instead of maybe double that in an HP. The multiple cores won't be of much use in Revit, but for rendering and multitasking, they will.

I want to upgrade my 2008 Mac Pro which is still working very well with ArchiCAD and SketchUp, but I'm not going to upgrade to the 2013 Mac Pro because I'm not stupid enough to want to burn money buying an obsolete machine.

Forget this Mac nonsense with Revit.
