Why would changing the section depth un-group all the detail Groups on the section view?
I can cut out these items, edit the section and paste them in place, but that's extremely inefficient.

Changing section far-clipping does not Ungroup anything.
Not sure what is happening. Can you post a screenshot or perhaps a reduced size Revit file?
I wish! ![]()
Here is a screencast http://autode.sk/2EJq7rD
I did not create this section, just modifying it now.
Try placing a new Section, adjust depth and see if same thing happens.
Also note difference between a "live section" and Section Referencing Other View"--that could be an issue with the Group if section depth gets changed.
This is the only section that reacts this way. I was able to wok around it by cutting out the elements that we exploding, modifying the section depth and pasting the elements over it. Still, puzzling and annoying.
What happens when you place anew Section ("live", not using Reference Other View) in the same place? Do the Groups get Ungrouped?
These are detail groups, so if I draw a new section, they won't be there

Some elements in your detail group may be constrained to model elements. When you reduce the section view depth, those model elements may disappear or appear in a different way (a ramp for example). That may break the constraints of the detail elements and subsequently break the detail group.
Thanks Toan, I figured the other user did this by accident, but hard to figure out what another person did wrong. Also, I tend to avoid 2d work and this is a lot of hidden 3D and a lot of 2D, so annoying.
I think for the future, I will do a move "disjoin" at a distance of zero to the problematic objects if I see this again.
