Changing North on 3D view. It only works on plan views

Hello Everyone,

I changed the North orientation on a plan view and it works fine.

but when I try to see the orientation on the 3D view, it does not change.

On the Manage tab and Position MENU, the only option available its "Mirror Project"

Does anyone know how to change the orientation on 3D view?

Very appreciated

Project North isn't relevant in a 3D view on in plan views (hence the option to switch between Project and True).  The 3D view would technically always be to True North.

@Keith you are right in the fact project north is somewhat irrelevant in a 3d view, but technically the 3d view uses project north to label the view cube, but I am not sure how this really impacts much of anything?

Perhaps the OP could explain what the goal is for setting the "north" of the 3d view?

@loboarch that's a fair point, but as the 3D view is free to rotate I'd say it's still largely irrelevant.  In plan however we can't so it is much more important.

It would be good to know a bit more from the OP though as to what they are trying to achieve.

Actually now that I am looking at it a bit closer, I think the view cube is showing both the project north and the true north. The "ring" around the cube is oriented to true north and the "cube" itself is oriented to project north.

HA!  So it is.  Do you know, I've never noticed that before.  Every day truly is a school day.  Smiley Very Happy

Do you know of a way to change the cube from project to true, and vice versa? Say I want both to be true north, etc. Because you can rotate your section Box, (but since my project is rotated about 15 Deg., the view cube "front" doesn't match true east. Like the "ring" around the cube does.

Any Ideas?

I don't know of a way to alter the way the view cube picks up and reads the true north and project north. The view cube is basically extracting those values from the project to set its orientation.  I don't think there is a way to intercept that and change anything about it.

Sorry.

I found a way. If you Set your East (or desired direction) to front in your 3D view using the "compass". You can then select the down arrow of the cube and then >Set Front to View>[Current View]. I was trying to orient it to East View, but it never changed the cube. But by using the "current View" the cube will then rotate it. Pretty Spiffy.[Current View][Current View]

@Anonymous - great post that last one of yours. For me it also worked by simply right-clicking the cube >Set Front to View> South. One would wanna orient Front of the cube to be facing the South (at least in the northern hemisphere, I'd imagine). That then achieves the desired flip of the 3D view cube and ALIGNS it to True north. If you afterwards want to ALIGN the view cube back to Project north - right click the cube and hit - 'Reset front'. Thank you again @Anonymous Tons of kudos

I found this older post and it got me fixed. The real issue is is that your quick clicking to elevation views in the 3D view does lead to a oblique angle of them, l so this fixed it - here's my guide. The other issue is that the section box needs rotating and I found that was less than accurate science; if anyone has a precise way of doing it - I assume its just remembering the degrees from project north and true north and then rotating the section box??

Thoughts?
